Castlewood Country Club: After 30 Years of Labor Harmony, Management
Locks Workers Out Because Workers Want Affordable Family Medical
Insurance.

After threatening a lockout for weeks, the workers and the union were
informed today of the lockout at the Club. JOIN US as we rally to
protect workers! Meet us at the corner of Foothill Blvd and Castlewood
Drive from 7AM to10AM to escort workers as they try to go to work, and
again at 5pm to help display the irony of the Country Club hosting a
benefit for Cancer Research as they systematically deny workers
families reasonable access to medical insurance

Call 510.219.6347 or email nischit(AT)unitehere.org ([email protected]) if you have any
questions and to RSVP

Background: The Castlewood County Club Food and Beverage workers have
been represented by Unite Here Local 2850 for over 30 years. The
workers and the Club have been negotiating their most recent contract
since September 2009. The Club's contract proposal would cut off
health benefits for about 25% of the workers who received benefits
this January, and raise workers costs for family health care to $739
a month. Most workers simply can't afford to pay so much and dozens of
the workers spouses and children expect to lose their health care if
this proposal goes through. During negotiations, the company said
that they do not believe that they should have to compensate a worker
more just because that worker decided to get married and have
children.

Other things you can do to support the workers:

1. Call General manager Jerry Olson at (925) 485-2232 and Board
President Jim Clouser at (925) 837-8969. Tell them you support the
workers in their struggle to maintain medical coverage for themselves
and their families.

How the hell does all of this labor news just miss the mainstream press? I've had to read most of the pressing labor issues from alternative sources. It's sad.

I have something going on this weekend and all next week so I cant be there to show support. Are there any citizen journalists helping produce videos for online distribution? Documenting and explaining these anti-worker actions to ordanary Americans is inmportant [as you know]. I've been underemployed for almost a year now and am thinking about working on grass roots propaganda- putting together/editing various video footage. This specific topic concerning healthcare or the business owners denying health care while holding a cancer awareness function could have an emotional impact on average Americans. Try to get some video footage :) Interview workers with heath problems and kids etc.

Thanks for posting this - it's really fucked up. I'm in the (in)"hospitality" industry and what the company is doing, and it really has a lot of people working there scared, so people should spread the word and show solidarity if possible - and call to harass the managers.

As things heat up, it would be cool if there was a thread that just listed worker actions with the phone numbers of managers, owners, and municipal and state bureaucrats we could call and harass in solidarity:lol:.

Hand out the numbers to high school kinds and say... don't prank-call random people tonight when you and your friends are bored and sniffing glue, call these assholes who are locking out workers and trying to break the union.
