Let me put my position out with some subtlety:

vegetarianism is individualism strongly linked with liberal ideology.

I have a mixed diet which includes both meat and vegetable matter. While meat can be very nutritious eating nothing but meat is not advisable. Eating nothing but plants just makes you a bit of prick.

This is one of those things that I agree with Zizek on. People who refuse to eat meat are degenerates who will turn into monkeys.

The Mongols and some Tibetans do it, and they seem fine.

Inuit too.

Inuit too.

Inuit take small amount of plant material and kelp too. They also consume many internal organs of animals, both cooked and raw. This helps them to obtain nutrients that they would not get if they consumed only cooked meat.

Moreover, they have certain biological features like large livers etc. which help them in relying almost completely on animal-meat.

I think that all Tibetans take wild berries and a salty "solid" tea called shumpaa.

But then again, apparently, so are you. ;)

You fight that battle... When you win, you can brag about how you were always right. Meanwhile I won't be giving a shit about what people eat, eating what I want to eat, and supporting communism rather than complaining about how people are individualists.

The brick-solid tea (made of yak butter) isn't called shumpaa. I think you're thinking about Tsampa, which is cooked barley (or beans, but not berries), a staple food for most Tibetans.

Tibetans didn't eat much vegetables at all until very recently because the high altitude and harsh environment didn't allow for much vegetable growth. Even today almost all vegetables sold are produced outside Tibet in neighbouring provinces. While most Tibetans rely heavily on meat and yak dairy-products, some, like the Khampas, are especially so. And the Khampas are known for their physical height and toughness.

I'm a vegetarian but I not of the PETA variety. In other words, I don't give people shit about eating animals, and I don't preach about vegetarianism unless people ask about it.

My friends seem to be uncomfortable eating meat around me though, which is annoying. I always tell them I don't care, but they've seem to have stopped inviting me to barbecques

I was a vegan for about a year a while ago. Decided it wasn't for me, chilled out and had some chicken. However there are still some brands of meat that I avoid/boycott due to some of their icky practices. :thumbup1:

Welcome back to the fold.

Has anyone else here made it their life-time goal to eat a species into extinction?

Die, Veganofascist scum!

Tbh I recommend everyone try vegetarianism for at least a year, it's a pretty enlightening experience. I improved my cooking and eating habits substantially over the 3-4 years I was vegetarian. I pretty much cut that shit out when I became an adult but I retained my ability to tolerate and properly prepare tofu, and live without eating meat every day. Red meat is a luxury and should be considered as such. I can't live without cheese and eggs though, and bacon is the best fucking garnish in the world. Goddamn I think I'm gonna make an egg salad. With extra fucking mayonnaise.

Besides, beneth their furry ulterior lies malicious beasts capable of horrorable deeds.

Remember that South Park episode about sexual harrassment pandas? I think they're definitely onto something.

I don't really see any good reason to eat meat. Plus, beans and stuff are cheaper. Have been vegetarian for almost 7 years now. I occasionally eat seafood, but hey it's the frutta di mare right?

Going to put it out there that I have seen a lot more lifestylist crap from meat eaters than vegetarians here. Not as a broad accusation, but when I do see lifestylist crap, it tends to be people harassing vegetarians.

You can't eat seafood and call yourself a vegetarian. People like that usually call themselves pescatarians.

Can too! That way I can avoid fish when I want to. I am thinking about phasing seafood out aswell, but that hasn't happened yet. Still I don't eat seafood on any kind of regular basis.

I call myself a vegetarian, but yeah, I am a pescatarian. I would say it is the reverse though, pescatarians usually call themselves vegetarians, unless someone asks about it

Are the labels really that important? There are few people who are "perfect" with their eating habits and I don't see anything wrong with calling yourself vegetarian if you only eat the odd bit of seafood occasionally, or vegan if you eat eggs/dairy every once in a while.

I also don't get the whole hating on vegetarians/vegans thing. It's not like our eating habits affect you personally. It also seems kind of ridiculous that people can't seem to imagine meals that don't contain meat. When I did eat meat, most of my meals didn't contain meat and the vast majority of my favourite foods are veggie-friendly.
