Ok, for school I have to write a short story on someone in a time of political/social upheaval. Of course, I'm going to write about someone in the midst of a 21st century revolution. Help?

You could start the story when the socialists have already established a stronghold, and are battling it out with the capitalists. You could show how it is in the socialists' community, as well as the capitalists'; of course proving to the reader how the socialists are better. I dont know, just some thoughts.

Try to keep it as far from political polemic as is possible. Perhaps read 'The Iron Heel' and 'Atlas Shrugged' to find out what you should avoid like the plague. Some satire could be alright, though.

it might help to look at some historical accounts from people who lived through previous times of upheaval?

lol i am writing a short story about this too. i never write about political shit when doing poetry or stories because you have to have some mad skillz to not make it sound cheesy as hell. i am writing about some spartacist about to get shot by the freikorps, and how there is this guy in white suit called "big lu" that is always with him but nobody else can see him except himself.

i also tried writing a short story about an insurrectionary milita made of nerds that have an obsession with Poncaire's recurrence theorem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poincar%C3%A9_recurrence. and how they are all angry computer people and shit and want to cleanse civilization in order for people tor ealize that we are justcarbon molecules. it had a pretty cool premise but then it got so fucking crazy i couldnt tie it.
i published a short story in a mexican lit mag though.. it was about this disgruntled primitivist kid who had a penchant for physics, math and astronomy because he wanted to follow "the laws of the stars". it was pretty cool, i cant find it though
