MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE
ON THE PASSING OF COMRADE NIHAR MUKHERJEE

The International League of Peoples’ Struggle conveys its deepest condolence to the Socialist Unity Centre of India, (Communist) on the passing of Comrade Nihar Mukherjee, General Secretary of SUCI, last 18 February 2010 after suffering serious ailments. We condole with his comrades, his family and the people of India for losing a revolutionary and a freedom fighter who served the people of India well.
Comrade Nihar participated in the struggle for freedom and democracy in his early teens. He joined Anushilan Samity, a revolutionary organization where he came in close contact with Comrade Shibdas Ghosh, founder of SUCI. Later he associated himself with a section of the Anushilan Samity which cultivated Marxism-Leninism. He was active in the “Quit India” movement in 1942 and went underground when he was hunted for arrest by the reactionary and colonial forces.
Together with Comrade Shibdas Ghosh and other revolutionaries, Comrade Nihar Mukherjee engaged himself in intense struggle for freedom and democracy organizing workers, peasants, women, indigenous peoples and the youth. Under the guidance of Comrade Shibdas Ghosh he participated and played a leading role in the arduous endavour to build a genuine communist party, applying the guiding theory of Marxism-Leninism on the concrete conditions of India, ultimately establishing the SUCI in 1948.
After independence from the British rule, Comrade Nihar Mukherjee became the West Bengal State Secretary of the Party. As party state secretary, he played a decisive role in developing the united left democratic movements in West Bengal. Comrade Nihar Mukherjee never wavered in his belief and trust in the people of India’s desire to wage revolutionary struggle to cause economic and social change in India. He faced the enemy with conviction even under the hands of the fascist reactionary and colonial forces, first in 1942 when he was arrested in Calcutta and imprisoned in a British prison for three years. He was again arrested and detained several times and in 1962 was imprisoned for one year under the Indian National Security Act.
Under the leadership of Comrade Nihar Mukherjee, the SUCI conducted important actions in the mass movement not only in the national sphere but also in the international arena.
The death of Comrade Nihar Mukherjee is a great loss for the revolutionary movement of India. He will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude for his contribution to the continuing revolutionary struggle of the people of India.
