Maybe he's "taking it back" like the word queer was...

But yes, gypsy is considered a derogatory term for now and maybe a mod/admin needs to clarify if it's "ok" for him/her to have it in his/her username.

The term Romani is interesting, since the Roma people originally were Indians who were employed as border soldiers of the Byzantine (i.e "Roman") Empire.

As gypsy can be offensive to Roma, then I'm not sure if having it in your name or not is allowed. But since I don't think an admin's spoken to you about it then I guess it is allowed. I was just comparing it is all. No harm intended.
