View Full Version : In our lifetimes?

Revolutionary Pseudonym

Do you believe that it would be possible to achieve a free, classless, equal world within our lifetimes (by which I mean in the next 20-70 years).
I personally believe that a revolution could occur within our lifetimes, should the opportunity arise, however I feel it is more likely that the revolution would be 'complete' in 2 or 3 generations time.
What do others think?

Btw, sorry if this is in the wrong bit of the forum - if it is could someone move it please - thanks :).

Unfortunately, I don't think it'll happen in our lifetime. It would be nice if so, but to be realistic, we'd be long gone by the time we achieve what we're fighting for here. More than likely, we'll be around when the revolution begins, because it's apparent that we're heading towards a global meltdown VERY soon. If it isn't the economy, it's the banks, if it's not the banks, it's global warming.

It will never happen in our lfietimes, but we will have open battle on a very large scale in our lifetimes based on the way things are going.

If it will not happen in our lifetime we will still get to enjoy alternatives like the zapatistas and all sorts of counter culture. Long live the revolution!

I do believe that we will witness an advanced stage of socialism in many parts of the world.

I think it's a mistake to over-analyze the "revolution" in terms of material conditions in order to "find out" when the revolution is going to occur. If such a deterministic history is possible, it should only be considered in a "greater scope." Marx's attachment of inevitability to the doctrine of communism was a reasoned view. However, he also focused on the importance of individual action, collective action, and embracing freedom to be an agent for change.

Instead of asking when the revolution is going to occur, we should be asking when we are going to start the revolution. It's possible that the revolution will happen in our lifetime. My personal view is that revolution is sparked by a large variety of variables both evident and complex. I think that the seeds of a revolution already exist, and if water (certain events) reaches them, a revolution will occur. I think as every day goes by, the seeds of the revolution increase.

I think if we do want to talk about "when" and "inevitability" we should talk about the increasing probabilities. I think a revolutionary at a workers protest should hold in their heart "the revolution is coming" as they clash with authorities. The capitalists want us to believe we won't have a revolution at all. Look at how many people believe communism is impossible because of roughly thirty minutes worth of propaganda they encountered in their life. If they can't get us to disbelieve, at least they can have us believing that it won't happen for us.

How much harder would we fight if we believed we could achieve communism in our lifetime, even in months? I suspect a lot. Regardless of what realities might suggest, reality is always pessimistic in a capitalist society. It always creates hopelessness. We need to crush capitalist indoctrination through comradely and force of will.

There is something to be said for pragmatism. But pragmatism should never involve retreat. If violence is not working, switch to education. If education is not working, switch to nonviolent resistance. A consideration of historical conditions should never allow for leftism to "wait" for things to happen.

Even if your leftism only includes teaching yourself, posting online, or admitting to others your political beliefs and defending them, you're acting. How much you decide to do is individual, but there is no reason to believe a revolution can't occur in our lifetime. It can occur because we are the revolution.

No, impossible. We might see successful socialist revolutions in some countries and the following construction of socialism there in our life time but you can't achieve communism with people who lived under and were influenced and stamped by capitalism. Therefore "we" have to wait for communism untill several generations have grown up under socialism.

Who, quite frankly, knows? Maybe tomorrow? lol

People have been saying "It won't happen in our lifetime" for nearly 200 years. At somepoint, something's gotta give.

I like to think I'll see a socialist revolution, but realistically I doubt it'll happen in my lifetime.

To be honest, I wish.
Even if it was just the revolution/initial stage.

I disagree, it is possible to have communism with people who lived under capitalism. It is not like the generations who lived under capitalism will be stuck with a capitalist mindset even after capitalism is long gone.

World? No, almost surely not.

However, I believe Socialism could be achieved in many countries within our life time. - Only time will tell.
