Richard McKay Rorty (October 4, 1931 – June 8, 2007) was an American philosopher. He had a long and diverse career in Philosophy, Humanities, and Literature departments. His complex intellectual background gave him a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the analytic tradition in philosophy he would later, famously, reject.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Rorty
I am not a philosopher but a teacher/writer. If you have any questions about Rorty or would like to say something about him, people around here will be glad to listen and respond.

Rorty wrote a hugely influential book 30 years ago: Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature which managed to challenge much of the ('western') intellectual tradition in philosophy going back to the ancient Greeks.
However, in my view, he chickedned out, and did not go far enough; in fact, he compromised and ended up copying the methods he had rightly criticised -- namely, the view that philosophy is a sort of super-science which is aimed at delivering fundamental truths about reality, which mirror the essense of reality, based on thought alone.
Much of my work, for example, is aimed at pushing his ideas to their logical conclusion, while trying to avoid the mistakes he made (that is, of advancing a philosophical theory of his own to replace the ones he criticised).

He was brought up by Marxist parents (in fact they were Trotskyists), but he drifted into a left-wing version of Democratic Politics, as far as I can determine.
