Because I really don't want to to be making coffee at the NBC or be a cop.;)

I'm a sophomore in college and recently been looking for an employment chance in the left. Internships are rare and Jobs are almost unheard of in these times. I feel that my ideology shouldn't be tossed in order to get a paycheck, but rather my ideology working for me. I'm looking for an interesting job in activism, journalism, indie media or anything that offers near free travel.

I was thinking of the Peace Corps for a bit but I'm unsure if I want to dedicate 2 1/2 years. Also I'm unsure whether they're what I'm looking for, as they are an arm of the American government's "aid". Capitalist missionaries may be a bit of an extreme name to call them, but you can follow their chain of command to the White House.

I might freelance with indymedia (which would be lots of fun) or something but thats fairly unstable and offers no pay. There are many others radical jobs out there, I know it, but i'ts just about finding them.

anyone got any cool ideas for those entering the world workforce?

Unfortunately, capitalism has yet to make 'socialist revolutionary' a career choice,

Personaly, I work part time as a cleaner. I'm selling as little labour as I possibly can, I'm doing a job where I don't hurt any fellow workers and there's lots of free time to do more productive stuff. Downside is that it's very hard to live off part time minimum-wage pay without finding ways to get hold of at least some of your basic shopping either for free, or very cheap.

Yeah, I hear that. The only thing I'm afraid of is compromising by beliefs in order to work within the system. I'm studying media arts/ journalism so their may be some hope, but all in all, I will have to end up working for a corporation at some point, how horrible it may be. Its a sad fact, one that I want to avoid for as long as I can.

I went down to my local Downtown about a week ago to do some job hunting for a part-time job at school. I found that almost every ma&pop store, or really any non-chain store was either downsizing, closing or had already closed. I went a mile down the road to the "Shopper's World Strip Complex" and picked up 10 different applications...
This is the American Workforce.

Well, one thing you have to bare in mind is that there is a difference between "their work" and "your work". Put in your hours, be a slave, then come home and do something about it. My passions will never die, I will never be consumed by consumption so my work ethic is to get paid so I have enough, thats it. My real work ethic is that someday, we may own that "Shoppers World" (if we really want it anyways).

Get a unionized job and start organizing.

I really liked this too. Might make you feel a bit better about taking part in the capitalist system if you're having fun at the bosses' expense :P

Get a unionized job and start organizing.

Or better yet, get a non-union job and start organizing.

Or better yet sell your soul and work to become a billionaire so you can buy out most of the means of production to hand it over to the workers. So long as there is concentrated wealth they will hold the concentrated power.

Work to become a billionaire? Don't be silly now.
