I have heard (I can't remember where) that among the conditions of the structural adjustment programmes faced by some african nations (or at least one) have included the scrapping of free education. Further that the manner in which the programmes were enforced meant this amounted to blackmail. I was told this happened in the 90's.

If anyone can confirm/deny this, or better yet has any sources of detailed information on this - books, articles, websites etc I would be grateful.

Cheers

They may have been "encouraged" to to open up for private education, but I've never heard anything along the lines of them being pushed to abandon public education.

I have however heard of cases in some African nations where they have cut education funding as well as reducing the amount of students, forcing those left out to seek education elsewhere.
