Quiet Flows the Don was one of the most widely-regarded Russian novels, it depicts the lives of Cossacks in a rural town before during and after the Russian Civil War. It attempted to explain the disposition of the Cossacks and their role in revolutionary events.
If you want an idea of what this movie will be like, think Doctor Zhivago, but about peasants, and also where neither side in the war is "good," but there is a slightly pro-Red instead of pro-White bias.
beware its like 6 hours! if you are like "WTF? This is a soap opera in Czarist times.." just keep watching! lots of stuff happens lol.. there are some big battle scenes of WWI and the RCW. it would be cool to talk about the book/movie if anyone has read it, seen it, or makes it through this. This is a great watch if you are happy with one of the shitty formats below and have 6 hours to spare.
Beware, being a "socialist realist" movie and trying to romanticize Cossackdom, this is sexist in a major way. A couple women characters do rise beyond stereotypical quiet victimization to take part in the violence, on both sides, but they aren't portrayed favorably.. for different reasons.
This is the best quality version (Russian language, English subs) you can watch for free.. but you have to download "Veoh Player" :crying: to watch the whole thing.

(part 1 of 3)
If you want to watch it on YouTube, there is a version uploaded where the first third (2 hours) of the movie has English overdub (a male and female narrator speak over the Russian dialogue), while the second and third thirds of the movie have Russian language with English subtitles. Beware, overdub is very annoying, it kills the emotional effect of any powerful scene.

If you can read the Korean language, then there is also this version with Russian language and Korean subs:
