Gangsta Rap: Sad, borderline retarded adolescent wank fantasists - just a bunch of twats arguing over who has the biggest cock.
Lots of modern RnB and chart Dance music is just the absolute sound of mediocrity to me too.
The Enemy for their horrible lad appropriation of Mod Culture - even less class or taste than "Britpop" in the 90's. Basically taking any of the invention or imagination of that culture and boiling it down to drinking in bus stops, smoking too many fags and watching the football in ill fitting tracksuit tops, drainpipe jeans, greasy hair and fetishising the idea of Band as an aspirational paradigm whilst writing the most condescending shit about the rest of us scumfucks that live out our shitty lives, work the grind (or would if we had jobs) all so we can afford to be saved for one night only by 'people's poet' (as ive no doubt he feels he is )rat faced ****s like Tom Clarke (Enemy's lead singer/songwriter). They basically sound like theyve only ever listened to anything by Paul Weller (from the Jam to the Style Council) and the first Oasis album.
The Fratellis for the shitty Libertines copy tunes but without any of the subtleties that made the Libertines (initially) interesting to listen to. Lyrically uninteresting and musically unimaginitive.
The Editors - not even sub-Joy Division, theyre sub Interpol.
And then there was the BBC's "sound of 2009" W(s)hite Lies. Who are one down again from the Editors in that lineage. White Lies were the gothic Scouting For Girls.

I fucking hate Rancid and Nofx. They have that kinda pop rock sound. Theyre like Blink 182 with mohawks and a "punk-attitude" image. But everybody fucking worships them. I also get a lil irritated over The Beatles because theyre worshipped by everyone and everything. Can anyone explain to me why (besides their far left-leaning political stance and their boy-band beginnings)?

QFT. The only riff I ever liked of his was on Cochise from the first Audioslave album - and let's be honest, it's a pantera lift. Will take a Dimebag solo over a token feedback squeak anyday.

Muse.
These guys were over here recently. They are also horrible.
And those Anti-Flag/NoFX type "punk" bands are garbage.Definitely. The unfunny jokes about easy targets as the lyrics to pop songs with electric guitar thing NoFX do is pretty much utterly intolerable.
Other than that, RHCP, U2, etc (the Smiths are listenable, if not enjoyable), I generally find Helloween's 'Keeper...' albums and the legion europower bands that take after than style tend to be incredibly annoying; more or less everything on the radio is horrible, mallcore (aka. nu metal) is asinine, and... Actually, fuck it.

here goes;
5 years ago i hated the Beatles. Couldnt see the appeal at all, i thought they were bland and, in short, not "rock n roll". To understand them you really need to think about them in seperate terms to people like the Stones, Hendrix, the Who etc. I love the Stones (as those in 'the know' can probably tell from my avatar)- Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street are two of my favourite rock albums of all time. But thats all they are - Rock albums. Beyond Satisfaction, Sympathy for the Devil and possibly Gimme Shelter the Stones really had not much else to say for themselves other than regurgatating tired old sex n drugs n rock n roll adolescent wank fantasies (especially after 1972).
The sheer scope of the Beatles output puts them on a different plain entirely as artists. Between 66-68 they were more than just a pop/rock band - i think this is where many people fail to understand them. They think about the Beatles in the terms of a rock n roll band when it isnt apt to do so. They were genuine artists working in the field of music. The ambition, imagination they showed during this phase is how i grew to love them - nothing was off limits. In a time when everyone else was obsessed with new-ness, The Beatles realised that you could synthesise the old and the new to create something else entirely. So you have touches of music hall, classical, brass band, jazz all thrown into the melting pot with the more sonic experimentation of the 60's. In this sense they were genuinely experimental, and groundbreaking - Tomorrow Never Knows is the first modern dance track, and Taxman was post-punk before there was any punk to be post about.
And they could rock out too - Helter Skelter a prime example.
As a rock band i probably prefer the Who. As songwriters i definitely prefer Ray Davies, Lou Reed and Bob Dylan, and as instrumentalists i definitely prefer Hendrix, Townshend yap yap yap.
But as a working collective the Beatles are above almost all of these - they were constantly prepared to be different and they were prolific, in a way not many bands are or ever have been. 14 studio albums in 8 years - 7 in 4 years since they became a "proper" band (Lennons words, not mine). Way above and beyond any achievements by anyone else of that era except possibly Dylan.

I dont think everyone is being ignorant. Most people (myself included) have specified a distaste for Gangsta Rap, specifically, rather tha Hip Hop as a whole. In my own post this was a deliberate distinction. Gangsta Rap is the idiots that just bang on about *****es and bling and how much fucking cash theyve got. Dont wanna hear it. i totally get anyone that doesnt like the Smiths. I love them but theyre an acquired taste, a bit like brie or watching darts as a spectator. First time i listened to them, on a cheap cd id bought, i hated them but listened to the cd again and again. Then it dawned how great they were. It does annoy me when they become too associated with the kind of shrinking flower, shy indie-kid type though, as i think that Morrissey was every bit as angry a writer as Strummer or Lydon. Certainly my own favorite Smiths songs are the ones that have some form of social commentary or reportage or some kind of third person narrative to them, rather than Moz simply bemoaning his lot.
And Johnny Marr's arrangements are some of the best in pop history. As a guitarist myself i find his stuff more difficult to master than Hendrix or Page.

I think that's a caricature of gangsta rap lyrics firstly, and secondly I think you would need to put hard rock under the same category if one was to be consistent, quite a few songs in that genre about money and lots of chicks if I remember correctly.

Avril Lavinge - just no.
I don't like metal. None of it appeals to me.

To metal sucks is like saying "rock sucks" or "hip-hop sucks", the genre is far too diverse for almost any overarching description to be correct. At this point there are almost countless sub-genres within metal, a lot of them butting heads with each other.
Sure there are a lot of right wing assholes, but then there's also Protest the Hero who's only two albums were very much pro-feminist. Even the sub-genres are breaking apart. There's a lot of really simplistic and brainless metalcore bands, but then you have Between the Buried and Me who are one of the most progressive and technical bands i've ever heard. And then there's a lot of fucking awesome death metal (melodic and technical are my preference), folk metal, and progressive metal.
Also why is there so much sublime hate? Their mainstream hits are only the tip of the iceberg with that band. They were also a band that did such a good job blending multiple genres (punk, reggae, ska, and some hip-hop here and there) that no band has really been able to sound like them.

This is perhaps the biggest problem with this thread. If someone is not a fan of reggae or jazz or whatever, then they wont have developed the connoisseur's ears for it and are more easily susceptible to saying things like "it all sounds the same". But anyone that has listened to any genre in depth has developed an ear for the intricacies in the different sounds of that specific genre. Plenty of people tell me "all reggae sounds the same" but i can hear clear differences between Prince Buster and Tappa Zukie.
metal is rubbish though.

Yeah i understand this. I get a humanist kick out of the creative imagination The Beatles music shows, and this is the level on which it moves me. Again, i think this comes from thinking about the Beatles in different terms to "rock" bands. It doesnt always go for the big, sweeping emotions or the animal rocknrollness, it deliberately tries to avoid those cliches.

That isn't really fair. While there are certainly some rock (not just hard rock) acts that have, at best, chauvanistic lyrics such as Nashville Pussy (who are fucking terrible anyway) they aren't nearly as ubiquitous to the genre as comparable "artists" are in gangsta rap. Even some of the groups noted in this thread as good hip-hop artists are very bad for including overt mysoginy in their lyrics. To quote MC Ren:
"I find a good piece o' pussy, I go up in it
So if you're at a show in the front row
I'm a call you a ***** or dirty-ass ho
You'll probably get mad like a ***** is supposed to"

cant stand that stuff. Especially when everyone calls all those bands hardcore. To me hardcore bands are bands like gorilla biscuit, black flag, government warning, bad brains etc. not the crappy untalented metal core and screamo bands now days.. mayeb i'm just getting old *sighs*

Unfortunately I think it would be a waste of time to make a list. There are far too many.

I actually like a lot of the bands mentioned in this thread. Some of them I listen to, but I'm not a big fan. Rage Against the Machine and Bush I like, more so the former.
Genre wise, I don't like most bands of every genre because most bands are bad. However, rap and country are especially terrible - there are exceptions. Rap is best when it is sung in a certain way. I'm sorry, but rap is not "tough." It's supposed to be poetic or a social commentary, if anything.
Metal is where the anger is. I mean, I just googled angriest rap songs, and I've given up. All of them are just laughable. The people don't seem intimidating or angry. More like whiny people with insecurities. So little emotion in most of the songs, too. Talking about losing loved one's or almost dieing in a robotic way. Terribad.
And country. Let's pretend the world is simple and everything is great. Oh, and let's reduce women to and men to stereotypical gender roles for good measure. Obviously, Cash is great, but country mostly sucks.
