Lately I have noticed a lot of teabaggers on Youtube expressing concern in Haiti earthquake videos that the UN is planning to occupy the US, take away our freedoms, establish an Obamacommunist dictatorship etc. Who put this in their heads? Is it new Glenn Beck special? Is it the same bastards who put this up one fateful night in Dallas?

i think if you can seriously believe that the president of the united states is a secret marxist who wants to destroy america and capitalism, pretty much any wingnut idea is fair game.

true.

seriously, the myth of the "communist" un taking over the usa abounds in crazy-wacko-right-wing circles in the usa. funny thing though, the myth of the usa/un (together) taking over the rest of the world abounds in the rest of the world...

personally, i have to say the second option is far more likely, and more scary.

The lone-gunman right has always feared the "world government" of the UN. Like most of reality, the turn the actual situation on its head not seeing what is pretty obvious... that the US and other powerful countries control the UN, not the other way around. Then again, US liberals share a connected belief that the UN can be used to reign-in US warmongering.

The fear of the UN is not new on the far right - I remember people telling me that the "black helicopters" were "one-world elitists from the UN" back in 1993. It's a crazy upside-down world they live in where white hetero petty bourgeois males are the most heavily oppressed people in the US (but black people just have it too easy and complain too much - but I'm not a racist or nothin); Mexico dictactes the US economy; unions are too powerful and control everything; women have more power than men; homosexuals force THEIR moreality on the rest of society...:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yes the UN will try to take over the US, however the US will just ignore the UN as they always do.

I believe it's from the John Birch Society, a far-right group active in the 1960s. They supported Portuguese colonialism and Tshombe's separatist government in Katanga, a front for Belgian colonists and Union Minière officials. They opposed decolonisation so long as they believed it weakened white supremacy; they had no bad words for Rhodesia of course. The civil rights movement was something they were very bitter about too. I believe the bit about having "invaded a sovereign state" refers to JFK federalising the National Guard and ordering them to protect Black students in Mississippi from white racist mobs.

The John Birch Society also believed water fluoridation was a communist plot to poison americans. If you've seen the film Dr. Strangelove, you'll immediately recognize the inspiration for Gen. Ripper.
