I bought it for cheap at the local half price. It looks like he's trying to be objective with this book and saving his criticisms for the last chapters but I just don't trust him as he went from being a Marxist to a Right Libertarian. As a newbie, I don't want to rest my knowledge of Marxism on a former Marxist.

But it's the only book that I know of that offers a step by step introduction to Marx's philosophy and economics. It just seems lucid and concise and that's what I am looking for. A lot the other ones I saw seemed long winded and geared more toward the learned scholar.

Are there any books written by good Marxists that offer a step by step introduction of his work? Very introductory, very concise and simple.

I've not read the book, but every review I've seen of it attests to its objectivity rather fervently, though effectively all of Sowell's opinions seem wrong, misinformed, and economically ignorant to me.

I know enough about some of the basics of Marxism from other sources but this book has a step by step introduction that I am looking for. The only thing is that I am afraid that I won't be able to tell when he's inserting his shoddy opinion about Marx but I think that I will be able to spot it.

But yes, Sowell is totally ignorant of left economics. He is a whiz though at his own branch of right libertarian neo-classical economics, though to be a whiz at crap isn't saying much.

The only reason why I picked up the book was because of the similar reviews I've read that say the same thing; that this is one of the best objective books on Marxism, yada yada. I'll just avoid the last chapters called "Marx the Man" and "the Legacy of Marx" where I know it will be all opinion there.
