Are there any specific socialist views on crime and how criminals should be punished?

Note that I cannot speak for everyone as there are different groups, with different view of the subject and each other.
The source of crime from the left point of view is unemployment, which we all point to capitalism as the sources. If a person is unemployed, they will have no income to survive. In order for a person to survive, they then must do criminal acts. If I didn’t have a job, I could steal from someone to buy food for myself, and so on.

The crimes that will occur on such society, means that the person is facing some problems, usually mental ones and needs to be taken under hospitality. We dont want to "punish" people but to make them understand their wrongs, and get back with everyone and live their free life.So prisons and punishments? No, those have nothing to do with the society s you are referring to.
You should take the "criminal" from another view point, the view of the person him/her self, and why was s/he forced to do something like that and you will see that either their would be a reason(talking about a free society always) which almost every time the "reason" are some medical problems the "criminal" is facing. So we should take care of him as a "patient" not as a "criminal".So eventually when he is okay, rejoin the society, feel good with him/herself and enjoy the life others died for.
This is a very common question around here, so im not getting any deeper as it would be unnecessary, and will just give you some extra links to see if you want.

I would agree with the Socialist outlook here, that unemployment causes the level of crime to be exaggerated, for the reasons given above.
I would also like to ask, is there any theoretical answer (by Marx, for instance) relating to crime and the lumpenproletariat? Surely the lumpen class will not be affected so much by employment/unemployment, as they are not considered a group capable of reaching class consciousness, and therefore their activities will remain unchanged whether under a Capitalist or Socialist economic mode.

I don't completely agree with the general view on crime on RevLeft. Take drink-drivers who kill people on the roads for example. I don't think they're generally unemployed or have been fucked over by capitalism.

I've never really thought about that. Interesting.

you don't think drinking to excess and lacking the means to get home without endangering others is a social problem?

Not all crime is caused by capitalism, I was talking from an economic left point of view
