My first post on here so sorry if it's irrelivent or anything.
So I was just wondering which is more leftist/progressive/socialist, Progressive Rock or Punk Rock, I know that generally Punk is more lyricly open on their views but Prog seems to often speak about more liberal/utopian societies, so I was just wondering what other peoples views are on te genres' politicts/ideals.
Cheers

Anything can be leftist, it just depends on the lyrics.
I,for one, have made leftist hip-hop,rock,metal and other stuff to which i cannot apply a genre.

I do see where you're coming from perfectly and perhaps I worded my question poorly but now worries.

Well, the question is how do you define music being leftist?
Is it the lyrics? The musicians....like their practices and words? Their ways of conveying a message?
Generally, genres aren't out-right political.....mostly it's the musician who makes them so. So.....it doesn't matter if it's punk or prog-rock...it depends on the musicians. Nonetheless, sometimes genres emerge because of a certain socio-political climate caused by the economic situation.
Maybe you could list some artists which you consider to be punk or prog artists.

Typically, I think Punk conveys the messages much clearer. Prog is more artistic though, and I pefer it in general. I may be biased, my favorite band being "Yes"

Leftist punk would be more overtly leftist, since the listener wouldn't be confused by random guitar and drum wankery

Yes! "Relayer", "Drama"...two of my favorites right there.
Music isn't inherently political. I don't know, there've been plenty of left-leaning prog bands and left-leaning punk bands. Maybe more such punk groups, probably so.
Keep in mind also that there have been plenty of racist punk bands, and I'm not aware of any racist prog bands (there may well be some). This isn't knocking punk as a genre, I enjoy a lot of punk.

I do certainly see what you mean when you say that music isn't inherently political and perhaps how I should of worded my question more like 'which artists/fans of Prog or Punk hold more leftest ideas/values'. I mean from what i understand is that Prog fans tend to be more idealist and aim for what is in practice a communist society; no offence to Punk fans or anything - I myself do enjoy a lot of punk - but they seem to me to be 'let's go and smash everything up' as opposed to aiming for the equal and free society.

Neither is more "leftist" but I dig Can over most of the bullshit generic punk that most people swoon over.

This may surprise you but most "prog" musicians dislike random guitar and drum wankery.
