New basketball league open to whites only, to get away from the ‘street-ball’ played by ‘people of color.’ (http://thinkprogress.org/2010/01/20/white-basketball/)

A new professional basketball league called the All-American Basketball Alliance (AABA) sent out a press release on Sunday saying that it intends to start its inaugural season in June, with teams in 12 U.S. cities. However, the AABA is different from other sports leagues because only players who are “natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race (http://chronicle.augusta.com/stories/2010/01/19/nba_563760.shtml) are eligible to play in the league.” AABA commissioner Don “Moose” Lewis insists that he’s not racist, but he just wants to get away from the “street-ball” played by “people of color” and back to “fundamental basketball.” Lewis cited the recent incidents of bad behavior by NBA players, implying that such actions would never happen with white players:

“There’s nothing hatred about what we’re doing,” he said. “I don’t hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now. Here’s a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like.” [...]
He pointed out recent incidents in the NBA, including Gilbert Arenas’ indefinite suspension after bringing guns into the Washington Wizards locker room, as examples of fans’ dissatisfaction with the way current professional sports are run.
“Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch?” he said. “That’s the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction.”
The AABA is targeting Southern cities, but one proposed city — Augusta, GA — is opposed to the league (http://chronicle.augusta.com/stories/2010/01/19/nba_563760.shtml). I thought that as well, but I think he's referring to whites in basketball, but he's still a racist for wanting segregation in the sport simply because whites aren't in the majority. I bet he wouldn't be calling for an all-white tennis league or an all-white golf league if he was involved in those sports.

Our schools are also still fairly segregated if not more. Check out the studies done by Gary Orfield on resegregation of schools in america. And if you dont want to read the studies or what not (even though they arent as dry as many might think) you can find the book "Shame Of the Nation: the restoration of aparthied schooling in america" By johnathan kozol, which is a book exposing the findings and actually showing how the disparities manifest themselves in individual schools and how they affect individual students.

the author Johnathan Kozol, traveled to multiple schools and gives you descriptions of classrooms with leaky ceilings, over crowding, which lack materials, and guess what they are filled with poor mainly minority students. He gives many excerpts from personal interviews he did with students and teachers.

The Canadian has to defend hockey. A lack of black players makes additional players hesitant to enter the league, I suspect. Society always has the people who take the first steps. Furthermore, hockey is an incredibly time consuming and expensive sport. Parents regularly can't afford to send kids to play. It often requires transportation as early as five in the morning - in addition to transportation in the evenings, in many cases.

Basically, these situations can make it difficult for people making less money (minorities) to enter the league. Furthermore, the United States produces far less hockey players, in general (though it's changing). Canada may have a different demographic when it comes to percentage rates of blacks in specific hockey-focused areas.

But yes, the NHL does have issues with racism and discrimination, like anywhere else. And basketball is a contact sport. It's always been that way, to my knowledge. Fundamentals still apply. And inappropriate behavior - and since when is being inappropriate a racial thing? It's called getting decent referees to call penalties on behavior that is unacceptable.

Some people think whites are genetically worse at basketball. Maybe that's part of the motivation. I don't know if that's true. I suspect it's not. The height advantages might help blacks, but people can take advantage of their size whether small or big. It's all about using it in the right way. ... That sounds dirty.

Fair enough. I guess I had a non-standard definition of "contact sport." I have to say, though, basketball is fairly physical. I know that just in random pick up games in High School, I was substantially better when I gained as little as five additional pounds of muscle. You essentially just plow through people whenever doing so doesn't draw a foul.
