It will be interesting to see if Butler comes up wth the old bogey of the "economic calculation argument" and the claim that socialism is some sort of centrally planned economy. That is the last refuge of all there free market types

Undoubtedly he will.
Doesn't it go something like:
Money is great. It automatically works out all the billions of calculations necessary for a complex society to function. That is, what to produce and how, where to transport it to and how, who should do what work etc. It's the best system we could possibly have.
Seems to me, though, that it has difficulty working out the simplest of things. It hasn't worked out that we all need food, clean water and shelter. Or maybe he will say that it's great that money can work out who lives and who dies.

Jim
Is Eamonn Butler an anarcho-capitalist type or what? Sounds like it will be an interesting debate!

CAPITALISM OR SOCIALISM?
Public Debate between:

Someone should bring it to Butler's attention that at times in The Wealth of Nations Adam Smith sounds downright like a market socialist. Smith connotes many ideas that suggest he wouldn't be a proponent of what came to be known as the "free" market. He's certainly not my bag as he also tends to lean towards favoring petit-bourgeois economics (he is certainly anti-corporate), but I think it's hilarious that these far right-wingers worship him when he favored egalitarianism, social services provided by the State, and the abolition of corporations.
The Socialist Party of Great Britain
I've heard some folks say the Socialist Party of Great Britain's a little on the cultish side. Anyone else hear this accusation?

Depends what you mean by Cult. If you mean there is a leader of the Party that everyone follows as a great theoretician, then from what i seen, that is not true. IIRC, their articles dont even have a name by who wrote it usually.

It seems we're a rare breed, even among lefties.

Good luck with the application, my friend.
By the way, Hopeless is a great name for a town.

Thanks. :) Filling it out along side my term paper, hopefully I can finish it soon. Oh, on the application, are you able to send your answers in typing paper? Some of my answers won't fit in the space given, at least not with my hand writing.
Glad you like it, figured it fit better than Hope, for this town.

What a shame! I was really hoping that Hopeless was a real town.
I'm sure you can send in in your answers in any format you choose. Anyway, good luck with that and the term paper.
