Looking for a book exploring the history of patriarchal relations, specifically the ways family relationships interacted with those of government and the emergence of the state. Dates I'm not bothered about, can go back as far as stone age to be honest. Cheers.

well, there is "the" book on the subject (http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1884/origin-family/index.htm) ;P it has been criticized a lot.. but was basically right on.

i'm about to read this (http://www.amazon.com/Caliban-Witch-Women-Primitive-Accumulation/dp/1570270597), which isn't exactly about the topic you're wanting, but covers a lot of similar areas. you can read some of it on google books (http://books.google.com/books?id=4-PvMvdVqp0C&dq=caliban+and+the+witch&printsec=frontcover&source=bn&hl=en&ei=GFpgS8mMKouGNOyEqeQL&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CBgQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=&f=false) and some selections from it here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silvia_Federici#Selected_works) as well.
