Haiti Disaster Capitalism Alert: Stop Them Before They Shock Again
Readers of the The Shock Doctrine know that the Heritage Foundation has been one of the leading advocates of exploiting disasters to push through their unpopular pro-corporate policies (http://www.naomiklein.org/shock-doctrine/resources/part7/chapter20/pro-market-ideas-katrina). From this document (http://blog.heritage.org/2010/01/13/amidst-the-suffering-crisis-in-haiti-offers-opportunities-to-the-u-s/), they're at it again, not even waiting one day to use the devastating earthquake in Haiti to push for their so-called reforms. The following quote was hastily yanked by the Heritage Foundation and replaced with a more diplomatic quote, but their first instinct is revealing:

"In addition to providing immediate humanitarian assistance, the U.S. response to the tragic earthquake in Haiti earthquake offers opportunities to re-shape Haiti’s long-dysfunctional government and economy as well as to improve the public image of the United States in the region."http://www.naomiklein.org/articles/2010/01/haiti-disaster-capitalism-alert-stop-them-they-shock-again

The effort to enforce the American occupation of Haiti is so blatant, that even politically "neutral" people (read patriotic American Liberals) saw right through it.

On Democracy Now! she was saying the same thing.

I loved how she said "I don't know if it's better worse...They didn't even wait 24 hours, but then again...they took it down."

I can just see it. All that rubble being cleared away from the palace and recycled... into a state of the art military base to police the country and establish a firm United States presence. Haiti was already “defunct” and now in ruin, perfect prey.

I'm reading the Shock Doctrine at the moment - the book was the first thing that sprung to mind when I saw that the US was going to 'pour aid' into Haiti. Sinister ambitions.

I'll just say what I said on my FB when I posted the link to her on DN:

This is what I thought of like the instant [which was almost immediately after it happened] I heard that Barack was promising to send in the Marines - I might point out, again. Actually, this is probably the most positive thing I thought of...

i read the heritage foundation blog linked above, and thought that their suggestion that obama ask clinton and gw bush to handle it was quite an improbable combination.

then i saw on the news the next day that obama did just that. not that i was ever a fan, but i didn't realise he took his marching orders from the heritage foundation. i guess you learn something new every day!
