View Full Version : Campaign against Student Loans

I find myself in the position of having graduated into a mediocre salary with a generous student debt hanging over me. Would it be progressive in any way to advise young prospective undergraduates not to take out a student loan? I mean advising against a student loan as a general rule. It seems the government don't give unbiased information (they want to reduce unemployment figures), nor do finance companies, nor do universities. Of course, there are certain circumstances where it might be a good idea, like a guaranteed job/career afterwards. But I can only think it might be better advice for undergrads to either work through university or save up for a few years first. The current advice seems to be overwhelmingly one-sided in favour of loans.
I know groups campaign (or at least campaigned in the past) against the tuition fees system but is it worth campaigning against taking out student loans in particular? The loans system seems like a bit of a con to me.

For most people student loans are a necessity if they are to attend university. Its abit like protesting against faulty crutches by taking said crutches away and using them to beat those with limited mobility to death.

Like joe said, people who go uni need the loans. I think it would be progressive to attack the idea that now university is more accessible because of loans, but not the loans, because we need them to study/live... :(

If you guys are going to do something to reform student loans, do it quick. I need to take one out very soon.

I think it would be much more effective to protest for free university education or at least government grants to poorer students.

I wouldn't go that far. I think students should educate themselves about which lender/bank whatever they borrow from before doing so. unsubsidized/Subsidized loans should definitely be picked carefully, etc.

As one said above, student loans are a necessity for kids who can really afford college. However, they should always try and get scholarships, financial aid, etc...before ever attempting to borrow money.

Wasn't there a legislative effort to do away with Student Loans for the next Academic Year? I think all we're going to get now is Pell Grants.

If this is true, then that would majorly suck because I relied on student loans to finish my u-grad. I can only imagine what it's going to be like paying for grad school. I needed subsidized loans.

It's criminal that any student should be a debt slave while going through and coming out of school. It's an outrage.
