SACRAMENTO, CA (KGO) -- A California state assembly committee passed a measure Tuesday to regulate and tax marijuana.
It is believed to be the first time in U.S. history that any state legislative body has considered completely legalizing marijuana for sale and use.
California's law banning the drug has been in place since 1913. The bill from Assemblyman Tom Ammiano of San Francisco would treat marijuana like alcohol.
Critics charge that pot is a gateway drug. They say legalizing it would promote other drug use.
The bill now moves to the assembly's health committee.

Thoughts? is this potentially the state "buying off" the proletariat?

i feel that this something better than the current marijuana laws, and also, it takes power form the unregulated and more muderous capitalists that used to produce pot, and at least puts marijuana production in the hands of a more regulated business. also, you can grow up to 6 plants if you want to.

its not here yet, but its going through the california legislative system right now.

Kinda makes me want to move to California. For the first time since the 1930s, marijuana laws make sense.

I don't think this is so much "buying off" the working class as it is trying to raise California out of its financial rut, though.

To me, this has nothing to do, or not do with the working class. But is becoming a known factor that marijuana is not what politicians have brought it out to be, despite the known facts that it's a health benefit to people, it's not as harmful as cigarettes & alcohol, & really the only thing that is harmful about it is that it still contains carcinogens, which can easily be eliminated through the use of a vaporizer. Fact of the matter is that marijuana should be legalized & shouldn't have restrictions upon it, for we've already seen the damage that can be done through the criminalization of a certain product; hint: The Alcohol Prohibition Act.

also, i dont really thing its a working class issue, but a social one regardless. most likely in california, those who have a job are less likely to smoke it because of the dangers of losing the job due to the employer's free ability to drug test and fire based on the results. employees can still be fired if tested positive for marijuana with the bill even if it passes

this part is what bothers me most about it, but it is much better for it to be legalized even though it is going to be heavily restricted.

They want to tax it so they can make up their budget deficit. California is pretty much bankrupt, and they're hurting.
