View Full Version : What is your concept of "God"- if you are not an atheist?

My concept of God has always been of a reality which cannot be personified or to which human attributes cannot be given, indeed ought not to be given, neither male nor female, neither good nor bad- human constructs, and so on. The infinite, the sum totality of everything of which we are a part. That is my crude notion of God and seeing as I am only a man I cannot comprehend what is beyond my dimension so there is little point trying to go too far or say that my belief is right etc...
I certainly do not conceive God as a bearded man who judges everyone and I do not think that most of the Old Testament actually refers to God anyway- heresy!
A friend of mine, who is a Roman Catholic Christian, said that my views on God were heretical and "Zen Jewish" LOL!!!! :D
This brought me to the question. A lot of people talk about believing or not believing in God- but exactly what do they mean?
So, for those who believe in the divine, or acknowledge some other spiritual dimension, not necessarily orthodox religious people if you know what I mean, what do actually mean when you say God?

well, i used to believe in god, but after a while (24 year wtf) i seriously started to doubt of the existance of god.
back then i was taught by my parent that god was the atoms of the universe.
he was omniscient bla bla bla.
today i dont believe in god. if there is something higer than us its an alien civilisation. Otherwise when we die we crap in our pants and the light are out.
that being said, i truly enjoy this world for the many beautiful things around; three, insects, rain, snow etc etc.
i find it fascinating how evolution and luck engineered all that.
also:
99% of the species that ever existed are instincts, and we are still here, Take that mother nature!

I was contemplating this question yesterday. I have been taught Gd is suppose to be so many various things to so many cultures and over the span of time.
I dont take religious holy books seriously at all and see them for what they were created for, a partriarchic system to control the masses. And until someone can show me a talking snake, I will continue to hold my views.
But if gd is love, like that single verse in the Bible out of countless contradictory verses, then I believe gd exists. I just cant justify any other force other than love holding that much power.

I respect your beliefs.
I don't take Holy Books literally but I do take an interest in them- I believe they are abstract, metaphorical and symbolic, and also have been tampered with too- so you have to be discerning.
My own rationale, and this is after years of pondering the thought is that if I were to sum up "God", albeit imperfectly in "human" language, then I would say.
GOD IS TRUTH
And that's where I distinguish "spirituality" from "religion".
