The Grapes of Wrath, Night of the Living Dead, House on Haunted Hill and Battleship Potemkin were good.

I also like Psycho, The Tingler, The Last Man On Earth, Invisible Man and all those classic Univeral Monsters like Dracula, The Wolf Man and Frankenstein.

"Psycho" was on TV here recently, and it was pretty damn good.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0010323/)
Nosferatu (both old (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0013442/) and newish (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079641/) version)
Strangers on a Train (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044079/) (a Hitchcock movie! :)

and, like others, definitely Metropolis (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0017136/) and Psycho (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054215/)

Not my favorite, but I'd have to mention "Pi".

Also, I think we should keep the discussion to contemporary black and white. There were plenty to excellent movies made before color filming became a common alternative.

A restored version of October was recently put together, which includes about 40 minutes of censored footage, including all the deleted scenes with Trotsky and quotes by him. Only one such scene made it into the well-known version; the film and subtitles were changed to make him against the rising, and apparently to confuse him with Zinoviev . The crude attempt to delete Trotsky is probably why the movie is so confusing and poorly edited at parts. Haven't been able to track down a copy yet.
