Hi guys,

Please post your suggestions.

I'd suggest a magazine I recently came across, but haven't read many articles of thus far: http://www.newleftreview.org .

I am not much of a reader, frankly. You mustn't read without enough time to really think about what you've read. What's that for an excuse?

Monthly Review isn't really a magazine as much as a monthly journal, but it has very in-depth and insightful articles covering all kinds of topics from a Marxist POV. Especially check out their articles on the environment.

Z Magazine is also quite good, though I mostly stick to their website, ZNet.

They're both social-democratic, but I occasionally (as in, when I have enough money) like to read the New Statesman, a left-of-centre week in politics; and the New Internationalist, which takes an important issue every month and has several articles on it.

Seconding Monthly Review. Also Adbusters has good shit sometimes and really aggravating shit sometimes, I don't have a subscription but I read it when I get the chance.

All the above are good, so I'll add Race Traitor, The Anarcho-Syndicalist Review and CineAction! for left coverage of films.

The unfortunate thing about many leftist zines and dailies is that they tend to repeat articles and themes, tread the same ground, or otherwise fail to provide innovative coverage of an issue beyond the established "party line" (this is obviously more of an issue in more "mainstream periodicals"). I hardly read znet anymore, or the international socialist review. The least guilty of this crime in my opinion are new left review and monthly review. If you have money and you want a solid bourgeois source of news, you might also look into financial times (the economist is trumped up editorial garbage). If you're interested in a particular area or topic, I'd also recommend just reading an academic journal (ie journal of palestine studies).

Although a reformist rag, Dissent. Their analysis of the current situation in America is usually uninspiring and can be a little wonkish and the articles are often equivocal. However, they do get some things right. In particular, their articles on history and culture are well-written and pretty interesting. Occasionally, I also find them pretty astute and broad in their coverage of right wing movements in a wide array of countries (they've recently written on the right in Pakistan, Hungary, China, Italy, Iran, Canada and of course the US).
