Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone else here carries the "Guevara" name like myself. Being that it is not a common name, I would like to meet others that share it. The only other person I know who's last name is "Guevara" is my brother...as for my father, I don't know him.

Thanks all.

Welcome to the board!!!

I'm not Guevara, but it's no matter...

I didn't know it wasn't common. I certainly don't know any as I live in Australia.

On a different point what about the bastardisation of his name by the people and companies he would have despised.

Here in Australia Streets Ice Cream have named one of their Ice Creams - "Cherry Guevara" Surely he deserves more than to have his name reduced to that.

Welcome, kiwisocialist!!!

Mine's O'Neil. How bland and crap is that?

my goodness! I'll tell you when I do go to Australia and see my last name like that for an ice cream, it would feel weird. It would be weird for me to see "Guevara" in bold letters like that...it's weird enough to see "Guevara" in this web site..don't know...kinda weird.

Oh well, it would be great to meet other Guevaras out there!

I posted this in the other thread, it's not really that important though. I know 2 unrelated kids with the last name Guevara, one Spanish one Italian.

It's part of a series of icecreams that make fun of 60's stuff by making the names sound like food.

Cinnaman on the Moon
Cherry Guevara
Candy Warhol

They're all so delectable!

Andy Warhol would have approved of that type of shit. Or atleast been indifferent to it.

Some of the others about events are fine also.

But Che Guevara would have despised it.

I can't believe anyone here even buys from a large American (I think) company like this.

Was it Ben and Jerry's?

If so, I wouldn't be too horrified at the concept of purchasing their ice cream, or their utilizing his good name.

Che would probably have approved of the portion of the proceeds from their ice cream that Ben and Jerry's donates to the Mumia Abu-Jamal legal fund - well, more so than one might assume.

In terms of ice cream, Ben & Jerrys' is certainly the way to go if you're aiming to be even slightly socially responsible in your purchasing.

It's an ice cream. On the outside there is chocolate; then cherry jam stuff, then vanilla ice cream. It's on a stick and Che's picture is on the wrapper. Except there's a cherry instead of a star on his beret.

As someone mentioned before, Ben and Jerry's is acutally a pretty good company. They pay their employees well, they donate alot of money to charity a various other causes (Mumia).

Anyway, stop acting like it's such a big deal to buy a product with Che on it, it isn't. We are living in a capitalist world, you can't avoid it.

The O'Neill family have been some of the greatest, most prolific of Irelands familys, they were among the greatest freedom fighters in Irelands existance, they go back to the times when English wasn't even a language, they were the ones who were fighting the British in the thirteenth century until Ireland won it's independence. You should really read up on your families history.

So, as one might expect, many people are understandably irritated by and, in some cases, disgusted by the existence of a product such as "cherry Guevara" ice cream, but I was wondering how far this disdain goes for most of you. Does it extend to the marketing of Che t-shirts, keyrings, etc., or only to an item that exploits his name. For myself, I would say that anything produced in the interest of capitalist gain rather than to pay tribute to Che or any great revolutionary or worker for social justice for that matter is wrong and deserving of slander in that it is almost a form of mockery. Would something along the lines of a Che tattoo be met with mass approval from most of the board, as long as the person with the etching knew their history and had the profound respect for the man that would warrant an inking, or would it more likely be looked down upon? Just curious.

I wouldnt have any problem with a person who wanted a Che tattoo if it was for the reason that you wrote. But Cherry Guevara ice is the worst thing I have ever seen, luckily we dont have it here. I have Tees with him, jacket, keyring and two big banners that I have used going to manifestations against the world bank, but that is on the walls in my apartment. Perhaps some people feel offended but sometimes you have to do what you feel is good. For me he was a hero and I feel lot of respect for the things he did and that he tried to do. If someone asks me about Che on the street I would gladly try to help that person out. Perhaps some people get irritated by others having bought merchandise with ches name on it, but I think its better to expose it to enlighten those who doesnt know anything.

To add to my last post, I feel that I should make it clear that I own a Che shirt, and while I am well aware that being that it was purchased in a store, I was contributing to capitalism, because, obviously, existing within a capitalist society requires such things, the shirt was purchased to pay tribute to a man to whom I have devoted so much of my time researching, reading about, studying the ideals and theory of and considering a hero since the moment I began to understand what he was about. Who knows, maybe this has all been posted in the interest of justifying my own ownership of certain Che products (the shirt was purchased in a Cuban owned mom and pop kinda store, if further justification need be made. Maybe I am being a bit paranoid and in need of a letting down of defense here) or the fact that I am considering a Che tattoo…
Thoughts?

I mean that if you name something cherry guevara its like to ridicule and spit at his name and the things he have done. Thats just my humble opinion
