I've never really been obsessed with a show before, but shit, I think that show taught this atheist about faith (in the show's writing staff).
I literally hadn't watched a network TV "drama" since the Clooney years of "ER" until I got hooked on "Lost". People repeatedly recommended the show to me and so one day I rented the first disk and watched the pilot... crazy crash, monster, mysterious bald man... I was hooked!
Halfway through the pilot I forgot I was watching a TV show. My partner and I went out the next day got more DVDs... we were caught up through season 3 in a few sleep-deprived weeks. Then we had to wait 6 months for the start of season 4 on TV.
I still really like the show, but I think it actually looses something on TV - even after watching seasons 4 and 5 on TV I bought the DVDs and it's soooo much better without ABC's tacky hype and all the commercial interruptions. I'm considering buying it on iTunes this year because of that (also because I think I'm going to be at meetings that night).
So what do people want to see happen this year?
I hope they don't give in too much to fan pressure to reveal every little mystery. The characters really ground the outlandish stuff to me, so if the character developments are convincing then I can hang with almost whatever else the writers throw at us.
The lowest point of the whole series (to me) was the scene last season in the room with the pendulum where it seemed like there was 5 straight minutes of exposition. Boo.

i think you can watch it on hulu the day it comes out on tv. there are still commercials, but they're only brief 30 second interruptions and you can just mute them/grab a drink. but yeah, i prefer to watch all of the episodes at once over a couple of days.
So what do people want to see happen this year?
i'd like to see a lot of the major mysteries "solved," or at least thoroughly fleshed out, though i can't imagine they aren't going to leave a few open and end the series on a cliffhanger.

I felt like it jumped the shark in season 5, bringing in an entirely irrelevant plot line without any attachment to the other seasons then adding in the scenes in season 5 to 'justify' the new plot line. I still be watching season 6 when it starts.

admitting to liking Lost in the UK is admitting to having SkyTV: a bourgeois decedance.
I watched the first few when they were on channel 4. Stopped watching just as some 4 toed statue was found.... I was enjoying it but capitalism took it away from me :(

which new plotline?
I didn't want to spoil the season for anyone but the two men who show up out of nowhere in the last episode of the season

ah, yeah. i didn't mind it too much, or rather, i'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and see how they play with it next season.
