I must admit that this is a bit of a "I told you so" kind of thread. lol. Recently some of the Republican paramilitaries have begun to decommission thier arms. It's good to see that this has had a positive response with the UDA at least who are following suit. I do have to wonder though whether it was the Republican disarmanent that's lead to this, or whether they've just been tempted by the goverment's amnesty on weapons. Anyway, here's the story.

Wha?? I wasn't "telling anybody" that the UDA are loyalists. I was laughing at them and then saying its always good when THEY disarm.

Seriously though I do not understand what the motivation of the loyalists is. Why do they want to remain under british rule?

I suppose they are afraid of receiving the treatment which catholics have experienced for years.

This, I would think, means very little to the victims of terrorism in Ireland. I doubt they've destroyed all their weapons and even if they have what's to stop them from obtaining some more or being re-armed by the British state? It's a bit like praising the British MoD for standing down a particular regiment of the British army. Hardly a victory.

And may it be dished out to the likes of the UDA in spades...

Decommissioning in the form of a mass suicide would have been preferable.

The Provisional IRA completed decommissioning in what, 2005? What other Republican organisations have destroyed their arsenals "recently"?

*sigh* any reason to burst the republican bubble, eh?

Speaking as someone on the ground, i dont think this is as much to do with the INLA winding down as much as the general lack of support among the protestant working class for the continuation of paramilitarism coupled by the changing political climate- Anti-immigrationism and racism is the 'new sectarianism'. Even Johnny Adair conceded the ''war is over''.

Frankly the loyalists stopped caring about the INLA at least 10 years ago because they just dont register on the radar.

I think there was talk of the OIRA decommissioning?
