I read that Che carried a sack of textbooks around during the Bolivian campaign and mandated study of math, Quechua and history studies. Is this true? I would have thought they were too busy fighting for their lives...

Ya, he taught in all the wars he fought in. Either he was teaching various foreign languages or basic medic skills, guerilla warfare tactics, alot of things.

Thanks Urban Rubble
Thats is amazing. Just goes to show that Che didnt want his men to be seen as uneducted, and only interested in fighting...
You wouldn't be able to tell me which subjects he taught in Bolivia?
I read somewhere else he taught them Quechua, but I can't find any reference that he spoke it himself. In the north of argentina they speak Guarani...

I think in Bolivia he was teaching the campesinos how to read and write, accually he did that everywere he went (exept in the Congo of course). Che was an amazing man, even if he was fighting wars and raising famlies he always had the time to teach the poor peasants that counldnt afford school or doing volunteer work.

One of the things he taught the most, I belive, was French. He spoke it quite nicely and he used it to communicate with some of the Guerrillas in the Congo.

I have to admit that I wasn't aware of these actions...and it makes me even more impressed with the man (as opposed to the pop icon).

Che understood that communism isn't simply a matter of who shoots best...but who knows more.
