I've heard this claim before, and its actually the only song I like of them. Any music buffs care to refute?

It depends on what you mean by 'goth music', its not a genre unto itself. If anything, there's a shout that it could even be a subgenre of post-punk, or a wide-reaching genre of itself encompassing several different styles.

Seeing as Paradise Lost started in the late 1980s, I don't think this holds much truck. Siouxie and the Banshees were going years before that - but I would argue the first proper goth single was "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Bauhaus

I once had to argue with someone that marilyn manson didn't create goth...

Goth is more of a subculture than a musical type, though I guess the orginal music was the darker side of punk (Dammned/ Banshees/etc), 'deathrock' (Christian Death, 45 Grave) and gothic rock (Cure, Bauhaus)... I'm not exactly a goth, but some of the earlier music that descended from punk is pretty good.
