View Full Version : After establishment of a socialist state, should games like Monopoly be banned?

I got bored and started thinking about this. Monopoly is perhaps the most successful item of Capitalist propaganda ever, making everyone want control and wanting to be rich. There's a serious side to it as well, after the dictatorship of the proletariat takes control, should we ban such games and similar products from our society?

When you play LIFE in a "socialist state," when you end up retiring at Millionaire Estate, do you get shot for being a capitalist?

To be serious, no, it shouldn't be banned. We aren't going to be able to force peoples paradigms to change just by the threat of legal penalty. It's a poorly thought out band-aid approach.

We should encourage as much freedom as possible, so long as it doesn't involve exploitation or oppression. Playing a board game, a voluntary activity for amusement, is hardly exploiting or oppressing anyone.

It shouldnt be banned per se but it shouldnt be encouraged either as it helps condition kids to see greed, cut throat practices as being a winning life strategy.
in a socialist state it would hopefully become a relic very quickly, maybe eventually a museum piece

It should be used as a propaganda tool to show you how vicious capitalists are. Of course, to make this work properly, volunteering at a retirement home or reading at a children's hospital should be compulsory afterwards.

...what the hell?

The odd thing about Monopoly is that the object of the game isn't actually an establishment of a monopoly, but rather, maintaining the highest amount of wealth after forcing bankruptcy of another player. If there are others still in contention, however, that is an oligopoly rather than a monopoly.

Infantile idea. There are so many games which actually are harmful. For example Postal 2. But I wouldn't want to ban it for all in the world.

I've got my own methods for playing Monopoly. Only problem is people said I was cheating when I gave a phone call and 15 minutes later the 10 hardest bastards in Doncaster showed up, seized the bank and everyone else's properties.

obviously a board game needs to be banned, because our ideologies aren't strong enough to stand up to a a board game.

Monopoly actually sums up capitalism quite well. As in real life, over time, power (represented by properties on the board) tend to be concentrated in fewer and fewer hands, and contrary to what our capitalist education tells us, victory is a matter of cold ruthlessness with an element of chance, as opposed to some meritocratic system which rewards people of the highest caliber.

This is a non-issue. If after a revolution there will be discussions whether to ban a game or not (and the authority needed to accomplish such a thing) then we're not talking about socialism. What happens with those who don't agree? Let them rot in jail?

Capitalist propaganda. PFFF.

Listen, the game Monopoly was first created under the name, "The Landlord's Game" by a Quaker woman named Lizzie Magie. It was developed intentionally to demonstrate the problems of private ownership of property, how it enriches the owners and impoverishes everyone else.

I mean think about it, what's the ultimate goal of the game, to get all the money, right? How is that really an argument in the favor of capitalism? It points out that even if everyone starts off equal, eventually everyone loses out to the guy who is more ruthless, more cunning, and plays the game best. If anything, Monopoly is OUR game.

A friend of mine cracks me up though, he told me once he likes to play as Warren Buffett, he'll constantly make loans and finance other players so they can keep playing indefinitely. It drives his girlfriend nuts.

Incidentally, why the hell would we want to ban things like board games? Kindof messed up, that's the kind of thought policing the Taliban did.

OMG, I laughed so hard after reading this. Thank you!

After the revolution we will all have unicorns to ride to work where we sit around and have robots feed us hamburgers.

I'm not sure why it's taken 150 years for someone to come along and succinctly summarize Karl Marx's theories into a single sentence... but you've done it. Bravo!

Thank

The game is a mockery of capitalism... ever notice that the bad thing, aside from giving other players your money, is getting thrown in jail... which you do a lot...
Then in the end you buy your way out of jail...

So we should ban RISK too right?

After all, while Monopoly asks you to be rich, RISK asks you to control the whole world!

Of course we shouldn't ban them.
Fun thread though

I voted no, but I wouldn't be bothered considering how boring and long Monopoly is.;) In fact, how about a communist version of Monopoly? All of the squares represent private property which you have to take from the bourgeoisie; a typical card, ''comrade, take £100 from the bank and distribute it equally among the workers..umm...players''.

Can we maybe make it more proletarian then? It were Auntie Vera in't lads' room wi' the rottweiler's collar.

We should ban it.

We should ban as many things as we can so we can seem as sinister as possible.

Fun is a bourgeoisie concept. After the revolution we will only sit around, in our grey coveralls, in between our shifts at the factory. If we are bored we can read Marx and contemplate the fulfillment of his vision. Possibly we will be entitled to enjoy our collectively authorized partners, for the sake of procreation, but not too much or we may begin to develop bourgeoisie concepts of love. ;)

Maybe we could just rename Battleship to Battleship Potemkin. The rules will now be that you have to replace all the White pegs with Red ones.

Most of it was yeah. But there is a small bit of truth in that Monopoly does glorify owning property and getting rich because of it.

And you still believe the game glorifies property ownership?

AK

Not really no. During the gameplay you do recieve payment as a result of owning and exploiting property but you can get ruined pretty easy and bankrupt. Gotta love market competition ^^

I'm all for banning all sorts of reactionary shit, but most board games I think are safe

but only strip poker will be allowed

Nobody who plays chess puts on armor to become a knight and restore feudalism (back in your place, pawns!). I doubt Monopoly will be any more harmful after the next social overturn. After money is forgotten kids will think it is a nonsense game and be as surprised about its origins like "Ring Around the Rosie."

Good luck with that.

Monopoly should be banned outright, whether by a socialist state or not. It's just a shit game.
