the only shared trait of those three "genres" is white performers, electric guitars and shit music

Psh no.
One particular artist that is very hit-or-miss for me is Clutch, which has some southern rock influences.
They also did that song from the trailer of Left 4 Dead 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kx6FV2qR2TY)
Another band that I sort of think fits the genre is Murder by Death. I think their music is actually a little more post-punk that just happens to have sort of a southern gothic theme in their lyrics.
Murder by Death sample 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOgCzuSkRFs)
Aaaand sample 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vq8w0_bKbgY).
those are my contributions but please please suggest more I love the shit out of sort of twangy electric guitar sounds for some reason.

corrosion of conformity is pretty good. They used to be a crossover band ( halfway between thrash and punk) back in the day but now they do more of a southern fried stonerized hard rock with socially concious lyrics. A lot of the lyrics are all about how the "man" keeps us working folks down. I think my other real favorite southern band is crowbar, really heavy sludgy guitars.

Then you like Down, with Pepper and Kirk Windstein on guitar. Lots of thin lizzy influence. They are Kirks fav band.

Not even American, but I was always fond of Orange Goblin.
And, slightly o/t, the whole drone-doom thing.

I enjoy stoner metal, sludge metal and droney doom stuff. Not sure if that is off topic here... But, here's Neurosis; perhaps the greatest thing this planet has produced. Not really southern rock, but they are from the south US (I believe) so...:

And here's a link to check out, this is a local band that's much like Electric Wizard, Wampus Cat. I got lucky and caught them live, they put on a kick ass show. http://www.myspace.com/wampuscatdoom
They've only got one song on there for now.

looking at it politically, some of the music in this genre can be right-wing but there is no politically pure genre. and even so, if i were talented enough, id try starting up a band like these:cool:
