I watched a couple of videos on Youtube, where he talks about his visits to Venezuela & Cuba, and criticising the american media of slander to these countries.
What's the deal with Penn? Maher type or leftist type?

Well i think that according to US's standards, he is not a progressive.
I think they'd call him a commie scum or something like that.

seems like a typical progressive. when the shit hits the fan, he won't do anythingI think his heart is in the right place but like a lot of people in the broad left, he doesn't know what to do concretely to make the change he sees.
For example, he rented a boat and tried to rescue people trapped in New Orleans after Katrina, he showed up at a big music festival in California and tried to recruit young hippies to join him in traveling across the country on his "activist bus" where people could teach each other how to become activists and organizers.
Kooky, yes. But also sincere in my opinion.
If there was a democratic-socialist party he would probably be in that (he supported Nader in 2000 (and was at the least not openly critical of running against the Democrats in 2004 unlike Bill Mahr and Michael Moore). If there was a US CP like in the 30s and 40s, then he would probably be a "fellow traveler".
He was great and really moving in "Milk" and he really is a fantastic actor who brings humanity to all his roles. I would like to see him do a good comedy though - maybe revisit his surfer character from "Fast Times" as a middle aged man. I think that he has the clout to make it interesting and it could help make him seem more normal and less like the "serious actor and moral crusader".

How likely's a Hollywood actor going to be a Marxist. The last few months really should have shown you that so few people there understand what socialism is, and consequently the best-hearted people are Democrats because they don't know that there is a stage (well, about four) beyond. So if Jane Fonda was European, she'd be a socialist; but then if Barnardo Bertolucci was American, he'd be a liberal.
