Nazi's in Oakland, CA

Anyone from the bay area know of the extent of this? I have had two recent run ins with fascists in Oakland, CA. One was a stuttering fascist who started rambling on about how the holocaust never happened and he apparently belongs to an organization in Berkeley. He sent me a long list of anti-semetic/white pride links. It was all very surreal. The next incident happened as I walked down a street in downtown Oakland, after seeing one of my patches he asked me if I knew what it meant and proceeded to lift up his shirt to display a very large swastika tattoo along with other white pride tats. Anyways, just wondering if anyone in my area has had similar experiences. As Oakland is a predominately black city these assholes are like cockroaches who only flash their "pride" only when they feel safe. I'm a 5'4'' woman who could not have possibly started a physical confrontation with a man probably weighing over 250lbs.

There are a lot of nazis in California but seeing them in the center of the Bay Area is rare - usually they live in some outlying decaying white suburbs. I don't know what their level of organization is in the bay area but I've run across two individual Nazis in Oakland.

The first was on BART, the subway here, and he was like a business-nazi. I wouldn't have even recognized him because he was in slacks, a black shirt (no shit) with a black tie. I spotted him because he had a small swastika pin in the center of his tie - despite his relatively slick appearance, when he got up I saw that he had the end of a knife sticking out of his pocket.

The second Nazi was a prison-style AB-type Nazi I saw walking around with his shirt off (tattoos on display) in an immigrant neighborhood. I was handing out fliers at the time, and I called him out and told him to get out of the neighborhood - he called me a "fuckin' commie" and did his stupid little salute. In retrospect, since he was alone he may have just been an ex-con and an idiot but not ideological; the first guy, the one I saw on the BART, seemed like a true-believer.

Again, I don't know how organized they are here - there's a Minuteman group - but beyond that their visibility in the Bay Area seems to be restricted to posting idiotic comments on the SF Gate (San Francisco Chronicle) website.

Well in other parts of California, they are pretty out in the open. There's a long and disgusting history of vigilante-ism in California (particularly anti-immigrant, anti-asian, and anti-latino). It's different in various regions - in LA, Orange County it's a lot of racist gang activity while in the agricultural valleys it's more like Klan-style groups (often working with or hired by large growers).

If the bay area has less visible racists it's because of the traditions of radicalism and union strength. I just saw the ILWU's Clarence Thomas speak about how white radical dockworkers fought for racial solidarity and the role this played in the SF general strike. Of course in Oakland there were the Panthers (although the Hells Angels were pretty racist).

Maybe part of the reason racism tends to flourish in the suburbs is because of white flight and the fear-mongering whipped-up around social programs during the economic crisis in the 1970s.

As for the BANA group, I've never seen them at a rally but I know they havn't been welcomed by anybody when they have shown up. If anyone has had to deal with them in person I'd like to know how that went, basically I'm wondering how seriously they need to be taken. I'm also wondering how many are active and what kind of actions have they taken on as a group (on their own not showing up uninvited at someone elses).
