Eight US 'CIA agents' killed in Afghanistan bomb attack

Eight CIA workers have been killed in a suicide bomb attack in south-eastern Afghanistan, the worst attack against intelligence officials since 2001. A bomber wearing an explosive vest entered Forward Operating Base Chapman in Khost Province, near Pakistan.
Several other people were reported injured by the blast.
In a separate attack, four Canadian soldiers and a journalist died when their vehicle was blown up in the south-eastern province of Kandahar.
It is the worst fatal incident affecting Canadians in Afghanistan for more than two years.
'Award-winning reporter'
The journalist has been identified as Michelle Lang, 34, from the Calgary Herald, who had just arrived on her first assignment in the country.
The armoured vehicle the group were travelling in was touring local reconstruction projects.

An award-winning health reporter, her colleagues at the newspaper were said to have been devastated by the news of the death of Ms Lang, who was recently engaged to be married and described as bright, quick-witted and kind.
"We are all very saddened to hear this tragic news," Alberta Health Minister Ron Liepert said in a statement. "Michelle covered health issues with professionalism, accuracy and thoroughness."
The BBC's Lee Carter, in Toronto, says the deaths will add to the conviction felt by many Canadians that the country has carried a disproportion number of casualties - which has now reached a total of 138 people - especially in comparison to some European Nato allies.
Remote areas
Initially, the dead Americans in Khost were described simply as civilians, but they were later reported to be affiliated to the CIA.
The BBC's Kim Ghattas in Washington says the exact nature of their role is not year clear but some of those killed may have been contractors to the agency.

Bloody good work with the CIA! Shame about the journalist, but I suppose that's what you get for 'embedding' yourself in an imperialist military force.

And?
Piss off. I know the fight against imperialism isn't something you particularly care about (and in fact seem to oppose, judging by your ignorant remarks in the Ireland thread) but that's no reason to spam these threads with your useless and annoying comments.

The CIA are basically soldiers. They engage in military, or "para military" activity to be more precise. They are legitamte targets in an ongoing war.

Don’t just jump on the Trot bandwagon Q its news from Afghanistan which is under Imperialist occupation.

I don't have any sympathy for imperialist propagandists either. I've never fancied Canada to be a "just" country; but it was Canada's involvement in Afghanistan and the so-called "debate" over it in the media that revealed to me the utter barbarity of the country we live in. :cursing:

Down with Imperialism!

I think it's interesting, it's uplifting news at the very least. Anyway I'm heading off now I expect a fullblown flamewar to have erupted by when I return tomorrow morning. Go for it boys

I don't see how 8 death CIA agents are going to end that imperialist occupation. Therefore this thread is forum pollution.

This thread would be more relevant if the consequences would be discussed for the Afghan people, the intensification of the troops in the country and the escalation of the conflict to other countries. But no, this thread has been so far about how great it is that 8 CIA agents have been killed

Ok.

Well, 8 people died, nice start. If the afghan people manage to kill say 8000 more then they might force the US to withdraw. Which can only have good consequences for the Afghani.

So, here's to having many more attacks on imperialists until freedom is attained.

There are plenty of other threads in the forum to discuss "the intensification of the troops in the country and the escalation of the conflict to other countries"
This is a piece of Anti-Imperialist war news and has every right to be on the forum.

Why is this news-/threadworthy?

It meets plenty of news criteria:

-Prominence (CIA is pretty important)
-Timing (it's recent)
-Significance (large amount of deaths in Afghanistan by Canadian standards)
-Proximity (not geographical, but social; Afghanistan is "nearby" for people who live in countries that participate in the occupation)
-Conflict (duh)

If CIA operatives dying in Afghanistan is not newsworthy, then what is? It can also quite easily lead to discussion, seeing as people in this thread are already arguing about whether these deaths are "a good thing". So it also makes for a good forum thread. This is all elementary stuff, really. But of course, on the "new" Revleft, all forms of discussion are politically suspect, so every thread needs to have an angry admin asking "what's the point of this thread?" while clenching his "thread closed" stick tightly.

I think he has the right to express his opinions, why should he "keep it to himself"? He's not writing anything reactionary, so I don't see the need to suppress anything.

excellent news, just I don't know where you found title "jihadist"? do you want to say that all Afghanis who fight for liberation are jihadists? I don't think so. every fighter against imperialism has his own reasons for attack. it was better that you left original title of this news. but I am very happy that 8 monsters died, it means that many Afghanis will stay alive, the same as many more Jewish (and others) would stay alive if more Hitler gestapo were killed.

What angered me is that I read a few reports yesterday referring to these agents as "American civilians." I mean, give me a fucking break. There are no "American civilians" in Afghanistan, there are only American civilians in America.

Like how the media always gets so outraged at the Iraqi resistance targetting US 'contractors', i.e. mercenaries and corporate crooks coming in to gobble up iraq's oil.

8 pigs dead and so what. That's what happens when you join hands with the monster, i.e US imperialism. Good going Afghan comrades! We might have ideological differences, but one of our goals are common, national liberation for the Afghan masses. Down with imperialism, especially US imperialism! Long live Afghanistan for its people!

Alastair didn't say that, on the contrary, in fact he said "shame about the journalist".

I personally wouldn't say "shame about the journalist", the journalist was probably a petit-bourgeois pro-western propagandist racist prick who deserved to die in a far more horrific way, preferably from brutal torture.
