Has anyone traveled to Cuba? I want to go but I can't until im 18 and acquire my Mexican citizenship, that blows. I wish the US would lift the travel ban on Cuba.... who are they to restrict the travel of its citizens??? Well as long as Mr. Bush flys in Air Force One, its ok because he's traveling in search of world peach. :(

There are a few FAQs on US citizen travel to Cuba, I think you could travel there quite easily, but You might have to tell everyone in Cuba you are NOT a fan of Bush. Search Cuba+Faq on Cuba

I was talking with a Brazillian guy at work and I was disscussing places I'd like to live in the future. When I listed Cuba as a place he said that would not be a good idea. He said that I am likely to find trouble, because of my skin. Apperently when I walk down the street there I will be shunned for being white. Is this even partially true?

No. My right-wing friend went to Cuba and he is now writing a paper on why Castro is good, and he commented on how all races considered one another 'brothers and sisters'

I've heard Cuban women love Americans.

Hey Chevive, you don't have to get your Mexican citizenship to go, you just have to fly out of a different country.

Does anyone know if you can fly from Canada ?

Thanks for the info everyone, I just want to wait to get my Mexican citizenship to be more safe. I heard a 60 something year old lady was fined who knows how many $$$ from the US government because she went to Cuba. I will NOT be a proud american... lol. I think i could blend in quite well, i speak the language fluently and know a bit about Cuba. Well hopefully i will make it there. Thanks again

I have been to Cuba and I can illuminate you all on the following.

Blacks and whites live in harmony. Racism that may have existed forty or fifty years ago has been completed abolished. You will not be shunned for having lighter skin than an average Latino.

It is perfectly safe. The crime rate is extremely low and you’ll be hardpressed to walk more than a block or two without seeing a revolutionary police officer, a military official or a Ministry of the Interior bureaucrat.

Thursdaynight,

I would like to know when your piece about your experiences in Cuba will be completed as i'm dying to read it. Also is there any way to know when Castro will be making public speeches as i would dearly love to hear him. I know he obviously does for things like May Day and stuff but are their newspapers and stuff there that publish where he is going and what he is doing so maybe if i get the chance to travel to Cuba i can organise a day where i travel to place Fidel visits and subsequently visit him.

Thank you for looking forward to my piece on Cuba. I've been extremely busy as of late and have had problems writing anything, even posts like these to forums. Anyways, in answer to your question I do not know where you can find out when Fidel makes public appearances, but usually it isn't a rare thing. You'll probably want to check out www.granma.cu, as it is the official newspaper of the Communist Party of Cuba and an excellent source of news.

"Do you know if there is any way to get inside and see the government headquarters in La Habana?"

Most of these buildings are fairly restricted for obvious safety reasons. You can walk by the Ministry of the Interior building in Havana, but there are armed guards all around it. The local Committee for the Defense of the Revolution (CDRs) are located on every block or so, and I believe these are public (always an open door, always people hanging around them). All citizens are members of the CDRs and they make decisions for neighbourhoods democratically, as well as keeping a safe watch over the Revolution itself.

You can, however, go into the Jose Marti memorial building (very tall) and look around for a small fee. It is very educational, plus you can go to the top and look out on the building where Fidel usually works, as well as the Plaza of the Revolution where there is a huge frame of Che.

NO, THEY LOVE MONEY--NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT. IF I HAD A MILLION I'D GLADLY SPREAD IT AROUND IN CUBA.

WHY NOT FLY FROM CANADA? THE GEESE DO!

You can fly out of Canada. They are direct flights into Cuba from Vancouver and Toronto.

My advice to an American travelling to Cuba is either go through Canada or Mexico, be prepared to spend a few hours at customs in Jose Marti airport - you will be thoroughly checked out. There is no need to hide who you are, Americans are not thought of badly and ordinary Cubans are (excuse the cliche) the most friendly people - it is really true. Wise not to discuss politics with any friends you make and under no circumstances try to buy drugs. Be careful where you point your camera especially near the airport or the plaza de la revolucion. You must go to the top of the Jose Marti memorial, sit in Fidel's chair in the plaza and if you can take a car out to Santa Clara (Che's resting place) it is unforgetable.

Most importantly go a.s.a.p as Dubya will soon implement even tighter restrictions and trade sanctions.

Buy drugs ? Is there alot of people selling drugs or something ? What is the penalty for a marijuana conviction ? Is it like Mexico where you can bribe your way out of anything ?

No, it is very unlikely that anyone will attempt to sell you drugs - just fake cigars. Cuba is free from the sort of narcotics available in other countries but of course Marijuana grows naturally in it's climate. My advice is stick to the rum - cheaper than water.

For fuck's sake don't attempt to bribe anyone!

What's the situation with the weed there ? Is it easy to get ? What are the penalties for getting caught ?

I'ts really not worth it, surely you can do without for a couple of weeks or whatever, you should'nt encourage Cubans to sell you anything - they will be in a lot more trouble than you if caught and we really dont want to breed a drug culture out there now do we?

I could go without for as long as I needed, but i'd rather not =)

As for breeding a drug culture, I don't think weed is that much of a threat.

Spring cleaning in the Che forum, this isn't a Q about Che :)

Since this is more advice than a debate per se, I'm sending it to Chit Chat, feel free to PM me if you strongly disagree.
