An interesting story (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8426523.stm) from the BBC on AI technology for video games. Seems the ability to simulate 'human' responses is increasing; however, the ability to hold a 'conversation' with AI is still limited to particular elements which he system has been prgrammed to achieve, so you can't talk metaphysics with a bot unless you prgram it to recognize the syntax and semantics of that area. Still, an interesting feat, nonetheless. Will be neat to see where this technology will allow us to go with handicapped persons and learning disabled persons. A useful tool for expanding the breadth of kowledge. What real world uses and implications could come from a technology such as this, I am curious. Has anyone out there read Douglas Hofstadter's work on simulating consciousness? What does this say of the future potential for communicating and accomplishing tasks? Could bots be programmed to carry out work considered tedious or difficult for humans (ie. agriculture and industrial tasks, etc.)? What limits does such a technology possess, and how could we expand those limits? I'd like to know what questions arise in your mind about this technology.
