So, I am I the only one thinking that the 00's saw the first signs of the fall of the American Empire? I mean, when you look at the USA's relationship with other powers now, in contrast to at the beginning of the decade, it really is quite a bit worse. So that is kinda a good thing. The music was good, at least the music that I listen to. Movies were pretty good. Technology has taken leaps and bounds. I mean:
2000:

As far as comparisons: culturally, the 00s were worse than the early 90s, but better than the late 90s or basically the same as the 80s.
Politically, the 00s were pretty bad. The 90s were bad, but things picked up at the end of the decade. But really the 00s were just a political continuation and acceleration of what's been happening since the decline of the social movements in the 1970s.

On the contrary, I think this decade has seen an, albeit very modest, resurgance in the combavity of the working class. I think that the anti-CPE struggles in France in 2003 marks the beginning of this new wave of workers struggle. Whilst in absolute terms the US lags quite far behind and in some respects has seen a retrogression, the balance of class forces can only be measured from an international perspective.

I rest my caseWell illustrated.
On the contrary, I think this decade has seen an, albeit very modest, resurgance in the combavity of the working class. This may just be a regional difference. In the late 90s there was a moment in the US when it seemed like the labor movement might turn around a bit. There were several large strikes that won (justice for a janitors, UPS teamsters, for example) after 15 years of retreat and big losses. Unions also had an immigrant rights campaign and began making alliences with the left and with enviornmentalists (teamsters and turtles). Outside the official labor movement there was movement too, but after 9/11 there were a few more losses and unions retreated back to the conservativism of being the Democrat's lap-dogs.
In the US there were big anti-war protests, pro-immigrant rights protests (on May Day!) so things weren't as bleak as the 80s, but none of these movements actully congealed and they were mostly channeled into liberal bullshit limbo where they remain today.
I think that thinks simply must get better in the next decade - it may take a few years, but there is some of that combativity that you mentioned in the air and hopefully the working class and organized left can build something self-sustaining out of that.

The Essence Of Flame Is The Essence Of Change

Browsing this thread and some other in chit chat, I'm very suprised to see some people being between 16 and 19.I always thought of some of you as....older.For example whenever I saw a post of Pogue for some reason I had in mind a late-twenties, always angry student who works as a pizza boy or waiter or something..

Start of the end of postmodernity; back to (more) rationalism again. Terrific: big changes ahead. Further verelendung.
I think it was a very interesting decade. Can't wait to see the next!

Not to mention
I was a pre-teen in the late 90s, so video games are pretty much what I remember vis-a-vis popular culture. Still, fucken golden age!
Ouch! I'm old... I was 14 when Nirvana broke and so maybe we are all just fond of what was going on when we were at a formative stage. Then again, I hated all the hair metal and pop music that was popular at the same time, so I don't know.
I really loved the early 90s rap and underground rock scenes and it really helped form my first values apart from what I had been taught by my parents or at school. Really haven't seen much like it (in rock anyway) until the last two years or so... I'm really looking forward to music now in a way I haven't been for most of the 00s. I've seen more good local shows in the last 2 years than in the rest of the decade combined.

Start of the end of postmodernityYou really know how to sweet-talk me:blushing:.
Politically the end of the unquestioned reign of post-modern ideas and identity politics in activist and academic circles is one of the best things about the decade. This clears the ideological deck somewhat and hopefully more militant and radical ideas will make some inroads.

Reagan also died. If Thatcher dies in the next 29 hours, then it's a triple crown decade.

I think it's been an interesting decade and I'm excited to see what will happen in the future. New Labour's partnership with the U.S. and its hunt for invisible weapons was a real low point, but it could've been worse (ie the 1980s).

 I always imagined Pogue and a few of the others being like a character from The Young Ones. It seems like most people here are younger than I expected them to be!

Shhh, you're not supposed to mention the Vast Jewish Conspiracy! Let's just say that you're part of it and so am I.

I bloody hope so. The 00s was a decade when I realised how low humans could sink.

Well I turned 13 in 2000, so I've spent my teenage years growing up in this decade. On a personal level, it has fucking rocked, especially 2009.

I can't wait for this decade to be over.
2002-2007 were fun, but damned if my life hasn't become boring and stagnant since then. Took a few steps to change that in 2009, but I've decided that 2010 is going to be the year where I actually take full control of my life.

The 00s were pretty good I think. We're seeing a resurgence of class struggle and revolutionary movements across the world. Plus, I was 8 when they started and I'm 18 now they're finishing, so as others have said how could I not have good memories of them?
I had a great New Years Eve, watched the sun rise over the hills and the ocean, and felt fucking stoked about life and hopeful for the future. You guys are all boring as, appreciate life don't whinge about it
The 00s were better than both the 90s and the 80s. The 80s in particular were a horrible decade I'm glad I missed them.
And as Pogue rightfully pointed out, it was all worth it for the dubstep

Do you mean right towards the end? Where it would be sowing the seeds for a more militant decade now. Up the Tenties, Up the Workers :thumbup1:

I like it. Decades have been known as '-ties' since 1920. It's such a strong tradition that the just-gone decade was the Noughties. I see no reason to drop that tradition.
ED: Would you prefer teenties, so it can't be confused with the 20s?

this!
Although I must confess I prefer Tekno.
The 00's were great on a personal level, politically it's been the start of the road downhill in my country. Although, in retrospective, these changes were brewing beneath the surface, the increasing acceptance of racism, autoritarianism, 'surveillance-society' and the comatose state of the labor movement here weren't 'all that'

You can all quit your whining. At least in the US, revolutionary parties have grown and I have seen that so has class-consciousness. Even if it is misused, the word "socialism" is being used more than when I became a communist. No doubt some curious teenagers will stumble upon it. I mean, if I did, so should they.
Also, The Antlers and Immortal Technique. All that needs to be said.

Yeah, look how well right-wing anti-pot and anti-sex campaigns worked for reducing pot-use and premarital sex! I seriously remember reading a anti-drug book for class in middle school that listed all the dangerous drugs and their effects... I went down the list like it was a shopping list thinking, ooh, this one make you think that TV characters are coming off the screen - cool!
If the most repulsive and obnoxious bigots are warning people about socialism, I can't help but imagine some kid thinking: "socialists want black reparations and universal health care and the people I hate are scared of them... cool!"
