Do you think democracy, in all areas of life, be it in the workplace, communities, on internet forums or in the family, is a good thing?

I think the poll leaves a few options out. I mean, I like the idea of democracy, but would you want to open the society you live in right now to pure, unbridled democracy? Would you accept the decisions of the majority of the population? I know I would be terrified of what America would look like if we did that right now, and would probably be defending my family and tribe from extermination if we did. I don't think it's fair to say that those are the only two choices. It's similar to disagreeing with Ron Paul and having his cronies say "WHAT...YOU MEAN YOU'RE AGAINST FREEDOM?"

I agree, and this is why I believe in democratic centralism more than "purified democracy." Too much of a fetish goes around the concept of having democracy in all walks of life. Simply doesn't work that way. Most people do not have the intellectual level or the consciousness to entirely run their own affairs, and some conception of authority is needed. There is democracy in some instances, but once a decision is taken, it must be acted upon and put into force, no questions asked. Otherwise we descend into parliamentarianism and circle debates which accomplish absolutely nothing. Better to have "rubber stamp" politics than circles.

Like most questions of this nature it depends on the one's definition of 'democracy.'

If one is using the popular (yet shallow) definition of democracy as mere 'majority rule' and 'one person, one vote' then we can see how it can lead to coercion and oppression.

However, if one understand democracy in a more sincere way (not as a mechanism to enact your or your ideological agenda) as a decision making philosophy in which people have control over the decisions that effect them, then we can clearly see the liberating and revolutionary potential of such an idea.

I think we should view democracy as way in which people gain control over their lives. We should all demand power in the decisions that effect us and our daily lives. So community members should be demanding control over their communities, workers controlling their work places, students and teachers controlling their schools, and individuals controlling their own bodies, etc.

If you set out with the framework that democracy is a political structure to which ideas and position battle it out in elections and plenaries then all you can expect is competition and a loosing team. Instead, if we work with the framework that democracy is about power to control our lives then we can build popular power will also fighting oppressions of minorities.

The democracy that I have defined I think should be enacted in all areas of life and I think to not do so is serious downfall of the left.

What about consensus democracy.

Certainly we can't open up threads about banning particular people to everyone. then the unpopular people would be restricted/banned for no real reason than "I disagree". But we can use consensus to establish certain standards.

It's sexist and everytime you use it a female dies.
How does it work then that I consider myself anti-sexist and not at all sexist and I use the word? It's not that I want to attact negative connotations to a females gentalia, but the word "****" means to me just a not a very nice person. I have don't think I have ever used the word **** to describe a vagina. It's just a bloody word; why do people have to get on a such holy crusade about it? Then again, my brother justifies usage of "gay" to negatively describe things, because it has come to mean something else than how it was first used. Oh well, I think I'm a bit behind on the whole "****" debate. And on this Marsella chap that everyone talks about; and the whole Malte, zionist thing

Great. I dont know about you but im already shaved my head and got my unbearably itchy habit ready. Christmas is for heathens and those who would blaspheme to the god king Malte and his only begotten son TAT.
I will arise at 2 am for 12 hours of backbreaking labour and turnip picking followed by a further 5 hours praising my golden Malte effigy in the freezing cold.

I have in fact constructed a giant wicker effigy of Malte and have proceeded to place little communist children in. I am awaiting communication from the god king himself before i burn it.
