You probably know the story - A 13 year old Dutch/Kiwi girl wanted to be the youngest girl to sail solo around the world. Her parents said "sure!" Social Welfare - "No way chick!" And took her away from her parents.
Then, lately she escaped to the Antilles.
They dragged her back.

What I want to know is your opinion. Do you think she should have been allowed to go or not?

Didn't she go missing a few days ago? I think I saw it one the news.

Yeah she ran off to the Netherlands Antilles. No-one really knows how she got there.... [Alien Sounds].
She got recaptured though, and they extended her state custody sentence.

I don't really care.

What puzzels me is how this constitutes news and why people actually debate this as if it actually matters.

Well, my coatie friend, by posting this what I would like to know is would most people here hold Libertarian values dear enough, that even if by respecting their choice it could mean their death?

She's 14. I wonder how she left. The reason seems to be that she was fed up with the intervention of the child "protection" agency.

i support the informed desision, so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. and this obviously doesn't, fuck the parentalistic state!

In normal circumstances, I'd say are you fucking crackers, but sailing is a very middle-class indulgence

'Libertarian values' generally make for pretty poor politics, I find.

Also, what does 'coatie' mean?

What a spoilt little brat she is. "Ohhh, I want to travel around the world and be the youngest girl to do so because then I'll be famous and have a lot of fun even though I'll probably die in the process!" I'm glad I don't watch tv anymore or I would've known more about this irrelevant crap.

I hope the state learns her a thing or about life, like humility. Her parents apparently failed abysmally at it.

A discussion in chit-chat constitutes a debate as if it matters?

Anyway I've not heard of it but I'm jealous because I never owned nor had parents that owned a yacht when I was 13. Shame it didn't sink. Bastards.

Whether it sinks or not doesn't matter, because there's no way she will be allowed to set sail anyway.

But then again, I don't think the whole affair made much sense to the Dutch either. Or at least, it shouldn't have. The whole footage was supposed to shock the nation, but instead it amused all of us, gave us a good subject at the water cooler, and spawned a million parodies.

(for johnny foreigners, this is what it's about, if you've got 2 hours to waste:

I comment on another thread like this before and like i said before a spoiled little **** wouldn't bother spending 2 years on sea and if she well prepare herself she would just be fine probably. we talk about youth rights but we called her a spoiled brat for wanting to do something brave.

By Coatie I meant Coat-and-tie Revolutionary.

The replies are quite interesting. To be honest I thought Most rev-lefters would be pro-choice in this matter, But I guess not. Teaches me for making generalisations about the left!

Hell I would sail around the world at 13 if I had a yacht and more balls!

 It's a joke about the Natalee Holloway case. A lot of the case was revealed by a crime reporter, who hired a gangster guy (Patrick) to befriend the suspect and record their conversations in the car with a hidden camera. Most of the conversations were pretty funny, so if you're ever in the Netherlands and someone is like "Patriiiick", you know what it's about. See the videos on the first page. :p
