The opposition in Georgia held a peaceful rally in the city of Kutaisi where, two days ago, a woman and her daughter were killed during the demolition of a World War II memorial.

About 2,000 people and the leaders of several parties attended the event.
The protesters criticized authorities for their policy and said "the fight against monuments is unacceptable and criminal".
”People, who start fighting with history and with monuments like this, those individuals have completely lost their ability to think,” one of the protesters said.
“As a citizen of my country, and as a World War Two veteran I take the demolition of this monument as an act of humiliation to my people. Whoever made this decision, spat right into the heart of his own nation,” the other protester stressed.

Meanwhile, the Georgian Labor Party has urged the UN and UNESCO to form a special commission and investigate the situation.
"Several days ago the UN adopted a resolution which condemned the glorification of Nazis and defamation of monuments to WW2 victims. Thus, the UN must condemn the destruction of the Glory Monument in Kutaisi on the order of President Mikhail Saakashvili," Labor Party Secretary General Ioseb Shatberashvili stated at a news briefing on Monday.
The monument was taken down on Saturday (http://rt.com/Top_News/2009-12-19/memorial-georgia-people-killed.html) to clear a space for a planned parliament building.
The opposition, however, demands the memorial be restored and a church be built near the site in memory of both the World War II heroes and the two dead residents.
Some also believe that by destroying the monument president Mikhail Saakashvili wants to erase all connection between Georgians and Russians.
Another low of one of the worst and despicable leaders of the 21th century.

Georgian terrorists = fail.

And by Georgian terrorists I mean Saakashvili and his cronies.

Saakashvili is a childish and frustrated warmonger, who after being humiliated in the short Russian-Georgia conflict, resorts to pathetic acts of vandalism like this

Blowing up an important historical monument just to make room for a parliament building? That's the most disgusting part of this whole thing.

FFS, it's just a monument. Sure it might represent connections between "Russians and Georgians" but aren't there better things to waste time and money on? Looks Saakashvili is either genuinely stupid, or trying to look like an asshole. On top of that two people were killed. Wtf man. Seriously. Just when you think people in this world couldn't get any more insane and despicable.

It is the best he can come up with, its so incredibly pathetic its inhuman. This would be like for instance, that we would go up to a American memorial site and desecrate it because of American foreign policy.

Stalin was the head of the USSR when fascism was defeated.

He was Georgian.

The soldier who raised the red flag over the Reichstag was Georgian.

Saakashvili is nothing but a terrorist.

Saakashvili and his gang should be arrested and locked up for all the tragedy it has delivered to his own population and to the Ossetians.

Saakashvili is nothing but a terrorist.
I seriously agree, and I never use that word in good mind.

The only desired result or reaction from this can be terror, controversy, and outrage.

The fact that people were killed as a result of this reckless act of terror, is fucking disgusting.

Not only that; everything indicates that he is seeking (again) military confrontation between Russia and NATO. In favor of NATO support, Georgia was the first country to agree on sending more troops to Afghanistan after Obama called for international support. I expect that Saakashvili will be prosecuted or flee before the end but untill then he is still a serious imperialist agent.

FFS, it's just a monument.Monuments represent greater ideas and past events of history that shouldn't be forgotten. If these imperialists are okay with destroying an historical monument in their attempt to whitewash any connection between the Republic of Georgia and the Soviet Union, what else are they capable of in order to keep history from their citizens?

I doub't he'll be prosecuted, he'll probably get away, unfortunately.

Monuments represent greater ideas and past events of history that shouldn't be forgotten.
Obviously. That wasn't the point. The point was the general stupidity of opposing a "Great Patriotic War" monument when it represents a great victory for the people of Georgia, not just Russia. If he really wanted to erase ties between Georgia and Russia he could have done something that actually has an affect on the relations between the two countries, not blow up a monument and kill 2 people in the process.
