Eugh... Rage Against the Machine is fucking awful, obviously they would have to win through a coordinated internet campaign and not their skill.

How do you people hate Rage? The worst I have heard anyone say about them before is that they are just o.k.

It's dull, unoriginal and it's rapmetal for fuck's sake.

I love rap music but rapmetal defiles my ears.

I love Rage, but they've certainly come down in my estimation (I know this No. 1 was not their doing) since their foray into the mainstream.

RATM have been mainstream for years but they've been shit from the start.

Not that the X-factor tripe was any more enjoyable.

I'll go on the record saying RATM is pretty good. I'm not a huge fan but I can definitely enjoy their music. They have a pretty distinct sound, you can tell if a song is from them even if you've never heard it. To some people that's a bad thing, but I say that's just musical identity.

RATM are ok, I'm just glad that xfactor didn't make no 1, it's good, RATM also didn't start this and say they are gonna donate the gains to some homeless charity so it's cool.

I'm under no illusions that they aren't capitalistic in some of hteir outlook.

I have a soft-spot for RATM since it was one of my ideological influences in going into the socialist direction, along with reading Noam Chomsky and the copies of the left-lberal "New Internationalist" magazine at my school library. In retrospect all those things are lacking in a few ways, but I think RATM have helped converted thousands if not millions of minds to anti-capitalism due to their position in mainstream culture.

Rage Against the Machine have pledged to give all profits of the single to the homelessness charity Shelter, and will perform a free victory gig in the UK to thank those who bought their single.

thats pretty cool....

I've noticed people who have a vitriolic hatred for rap (as opposed to it just not being their thing) tend to have a bit of latent racism lurking about

i.e.

"rarara rap sucks it isn't even music just some guy mumbling (read: singing is now the only valid vocal musical style) rarara only real instruments (read: western/white instruments) are legit!!"

vs.

"eh not too into rap, but I recognize it as a valid musical artform"

etcetc

In the case of my dislike for RATM, it's not the rap that bothers me, it's the metal. I love rap, but I do harbor a vitriolic hatred for metal and I don't believe it's music. Coincidentally or not, I also hate white people.

Anybody who dislikes RATM is obviously not a real leftist, or is not fit to serve the revolution in the 21st century. We all know that when the workers siege the White House, "Killing in The Name" will be playing in the background.:p

Well, a lot of specifically "leftist" music is not very good, to say the least.

RATM is probably one of the worst bands I've ever had the misfortune of listening too. I tried to like them when I was 15 and young and rebellious, but even back then I thought they were awful. Besides, they cram in poorly thought out political messages into their music, which just makes it even worse. I could care less about them being "mainstream" or not, their music sucks regardless.

heres a review of the song i saw on the buy link  i didnt buy it though. i need my money for better things and i prefer not to pay for music

Not since Bing Crosby's 'White Christmas' has such a beautiful Christmas song been written.

This release from Rage Against The Machine gently plucks on our heart's sentimental strings, and whisks us off into a winter wonderland full of love and hope, befitting of this time of year.

The opening stanzas softly move from allusion and metaphor to a more direct comment on how Christmas brings out the child in us all and the importance of recognising love in our surroundings.

As the song briskly flitters into the bridge, we can almost smell the log fires burning and taste the sweet and heady mixture of mulled wine and dark yuletide chocolate dancing in our mouths. De la Rocha's sweet refrain conjures visions of Elks sprinkled with snow, scattered across a wintery mountainside as one peers from a warm cabin in the distance, sharing anecdotes with loved ones next to a crackling fireside.

Then, just a jaunt away, the chorus is a thrilling sleigh ride, glistening and sparkling our way across a winter scene, punctuated by crystal beads of snow prickling the skin, filling us with joy and reminding us of the true nature of Christmas once again...love.

This slightly up-tempo but heart-felt song is truly a breath of fresh air. In a society where Christmas seems to have lost some of its meaning this festive song takes us back (or forwards maybe) to a simpler time when what really counted was 'togetherness' and 'virtue', and of 'altruism' and 'honesty'.

With a subtle nod to the cool Jazz standards of 30s and maybe influenced slightly by such great vocalists as Vera Lynn and Cliff Richards, this song will appeal to everyone both young and old, and seems on course to make it into the echelons of great Christmas records.

Im delighted they won because I really do despise the X-Factor industry.
I also recognise the messages behind their songs are quite progressive.
But jaysus I cant stand that music, I can neither understand their rap or like the heavy metal in it.
Its just not my cup of tea, I find it discomfortable to listen to.

They aren't metal in that mortifyingly tacky sense. The guitar work is heavy rhythmic. Plus they probably played the biggest part in stopping metal being all dick-swinging in blue lycra.

And they're good musicians
