View Full Version : Selling Che out? - People who wear the shirt but have no ide

I am a Graphic Designer. A person in my Uni course recently wore a Che t-shirt to Uni... when a friend asked if she knew who the guy on the shirt was, she had no idea....
... I know of others who have given this response.
I am writing a thesis on Design Responsibility. And so I am wondering, people who know, is it a problem that people wear these shirts in comfortable ignorance? Should we only wear things that we believe in? And does this 'commodification' of Che pose a real problem for important social theory?
I would be really interested to see what you all have to say.
Cheerio!

Yes and no. Think about it. This is a political virus of sorts. When diesel picks his picture up (which I AM pissed off about by the way), they incorporate it into the pop culture. So the political message behind it is only a step away. Hopefully, when the time comes, bringing up che's image alongside the revolution will get those pop kids' interest, as it is already a popular symbol.

Thanks. It was Lenin by the way.
Good point CyM, but alot of the pop kids are too apathetic, sure you could help a few but most are just pieces of crap.

I think that the person wearing something they do not know about would suffer the most by another person pointing out the fact that they don't know what they are wearing. I think it's pretty stupid for people to wear something that they do not know about because then they become poseurs, in my opinion.
Even though I'm against people dressing a certain way just to advertise their beliefs, I think that if you don't believe in it, don't wear it.
Aside of people wearing things that they don't understand or know about, hispanic people that don't know who Che is kind of makes me very angry too. I know that a lot of people are not exposed to being educated to levels beyond thinking democracy is a god, but still. Che was a very famous man and I think everyone should have the honor to know who he was.

I have two Che Shirts, which I wear coz they look cool. I do also like him, but other people are more important to me.
However, I have been asked so many times where I got my shirt(s) from by people who have no idea who he is. I also remember reading some magazine, and when I got to the fashion section, it had this thing about 'cool' shirts. Guess what, a Ce shirt was one of them.

If I wear my che-shirt when I go to school I only get comments from the older teachters who ask me questions like: "Do you know who that man is?" or "You do know that he's a terrorist right" or "Do you like his ideas?"
but all the other kids haven't got a clue who he is...infact...since I am wearing my che-shirt's, there are probably 10 or 15 others with che-shirts walking around. Some of the older kids even have jackets with "CCCP" on them or "CUBA * Moscow".
i do think that if people don't know who he is should not wear stuff with his face on it...but on the other hand...if we do not use stuf like t-shirts to promote che no one will know who he is/was...
so I believe we have to use capitalisme to promote che and his marxist idea's...

well hello everyone
ok my thoughts on this are simple...it's wrong!
at my school there's about 5,000 students and everyday i see at least 20 or 30 peolple wearing a Che shirt or patch and when i ask them if they know who he was or what he stood for only about 4 could answer. it kinda of annooys me that "fashion" is kind of exploiting Che i mean i was walking around in a shopping center and what did i see in an ARMANIE store? none other than a Che t-shirt....that annoyed me. I also see girls walking around wearing their trendy tight pink shirts with Che on them...WTF is that ...pink Che shirts?

my point exactly schumi :|
I have various clothes with che on them and here it seems that many people actually knows a little about che, and some people ask me who this man was and I tell them. I think its a good thing promoting che and his beliefs this way. And for the comments on that che was a terrorist, it just tells that that person doesnt have a clue what its all about and if given a chance I will have a lengthy conversation with the person.. Best of all is that here is lots of latin people and I have made lots of friends just by wearing my che... I wear it and Im proud..

My dad told me an excellent story from an airport. There was this girl at the airport talking to a friend of hers, and she had this really glitzy MTV style t-shirt on.... except there was a big picture of CHE on it! It was like that sparkly shit MTV whores wear, except of course with a wholly inapropriate picture on it.
So her friend, sitting next to my dad, asks who the dude on the picture is. She says the following:
"It's like, you know, the dude at the store, like? He like, said that the dude on the picture was like, some old murderer and stuff! I was like, No way! And he was like, Yes way! And I was like, well you know, like, it looks good ya know, it's a cool picture, like, so like, who cares ya know?"
I want that girl to die. Violently. In the rain.

Is there something about rain? Or are you a in the rain murdering fetish?
Back to the point, I don't mind if people wear commuist shirts because thier is always a chance that some cappie will look at the shit and decide to learn more about Communism. Let the Cappie companies spread our opinions and heros for us, it will only destroy them in the end
