Yeah you can be Chris, i'll be Christopher as in Greek culture Chris and Christopher are two different names not like in English where one is the shortened version of the other.
So tells us about yourselves people. Your australianess, problems and stuff in life, what is happening and going out, hopes and dreams. Make this just for aussies though. :)

Dan Majerle

Alright i'll begin
My name is Christopher, i turned 18 on 7 February. I am university. My mate from Germany called me today so i was happy to talk to him after a long time. I hope to visit him and my family in Greece in the July holidays but this SARS thing is making everything turn out unfavourably for me. I hope i can go but i don't want to risk anything. I work as an afterschool carer which is basically getting paid 14 dollars an hour to play cricket and two square with kids. On Friday night probably go out with mates to crown for drinks. Saturday night i have bball game and next week mates 21st birthday. :)

Okay, my turn.

I name is technically Personal information removed I am in my Writers Workshop class right now, supposed to be writing my biography I chose to do on Jean-Paul Sartre. My neck is sore... Well, since it is May Day I am having a silent celebration by wearing my "International Terrorist" shirt with Dubya's face on it and also wearing my Che/Cuba/Revolucion badge on my shirt. I was tempted to bring my flag, but I thought it may offend too many people. Well, sorry to cut this short, but I better do my biography.

BTW, [b] FUCK PATRIOTISM

Ok, I'm Linden, I'm 19

I'm at Monash uni in Melbourne studying politics, international relations, history and Russian language.

I am travelling around the world in Juse so that'll be awesome. I'm working in the construction industry to pay the bills.

ALL OF YOU ARE DISCRIMINITIVE BASTARDS!!!

Anyway, Tassie isn't that bad. You know, I'm actually a Queenslander. I was born in Innisfail (south of Cairns), but I unfortunately have lived in Tassie the last 15 and a half years of my life (I'm 17 BTW).

How is we Ian the Gerbal? Or should I say, Ian my Gerbal :)

Do all these people here want to meet up? If so, can you state your preferred area, and we will try to make a compromise (not the kind of compromise where we have to go halfway between, we will just find a way).

[B]Happy second May Day people (May Day in N.T. aswell)!
Karl Marx's birthday!

Ian
5th May 2003, 09:03
Innisfail AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA BOGAN!
The Gerbal is just fine, but you treat it so badly, I should ring up Dr. Harry and have you arrested!
Here's a compromise, let's all meet down the road from my house (the compromise is it's not on my doorstep or anything really easy for me), and no you cannot sleep over, mum won't let me have friends who don't shower or care for their hair!

NT has Mayday?

Beccie
5th May 2003, 10:32
My hair is fine despite the fact I don't have showers!

There are comrades from Sydney, Tassie and Melbourne. Because Melbourne is the best city and is roughly midway b/w Tassie and Sydney I think its the perfect compromise! :)

Excuse me! I prefer the ANUS of the world!
Anyway, I think the meeting should be like at the end of the year (maybe January, coz that is when it is chepaest the travel during a holiday).

You know, if I was a bastard I could ask everyone to come to my ANUS ... I mean doorstep, but I realise that other people need to be taken into consideration (besisdes the fact Tasmania is an ANUS

Anyway, what you people up to?

It was really cool, but I didn't say as much as I would have preferred.

My biggest problem with it was that most people had this misconcept communism (not surprising) which made them vehemently against it. So I tried not to talk about it too much. However, there was this Chinese exchange student who I had a huge conversation which about it (though it was somewhat confusing given his English).

Overall, it was fun.

I think it might be difficult for my mum to let me go by myself, but I'll have to think of what to say to her first. But I've gone to Melb by my self before (it was quite the situation!)

Anyway, how is we all?

Dan Majerle
23rd May 2003, 02:22
Yeah meet in Melbourne. I'm afraid my house doesn't hold enough for visitors. We only have 3 beds for the four of us. But there is a cheap and 3 star motel in Oakleigh, the suburb where i live right next door to a MExican cantina with great food. It's on Dandenong road a bit further down from the McDonalds on the way to the city, you know it Linden?
Seriously if you guys stay in that then it will be near me and Linden sort of but i'm not sure about beck.

Yeah life is great Chenthar. I just got a huge pay rise from 9.80 to 14.41!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Freak that is great. Hopefully i can get a tutoring job for history or english and then i'm in the money and then NOBODY WILL BE ABLE TO STOP THE MONEY TRAIN!!!!!!!!
But yeah we lost in basketball last night but never fear we got into a fight as we all wanted to and my mate got kicked out of the stadium. It was a fun night :) Hey Linden do you play basketball cause if you do we need a couple more players. We only have 6 and considering one is going to get kicked out every game we might need more.

I will be 18 in October, so there is no problem there. Maybe we could drive around Melbourne like bogans? I've never been a bogan before, could be a good experience for such a young person as me.

Gerbal comrade Ian, how much would it cost for you to travel to Melbourne? It would cost me maybe $200 return, but I reckon I'll nedd at least another $100 for other expenses.

I am glad we didn't get the direct route to the world cup. We don't deserve it. South America all the way baby! Though i think that the central americans have too many spots. I think they have 2.5 and only two good teams are featured in that area, the U.S. and Mexico. Maybe half that spot should be given to OCeania so we could get direct entry. I think the solution would be to make Australia part of Asia. Seriously how is it fair that teams like Netherlands and Columbia miss out when potentially we can have Australia and New Zealand get through against teams like Fiji and those small nations. I think that because of the dominance of the South Americans, (they have won 9 of the 17 world cups), along with their rich soccer history and tradition deserve their 4.5 spots. Australia does not deserve direct route if they can't even have a stable soccer league that doesn't always become bankrupt and not be able to beat New Zealand to make Confederations Cup. They have to prove themselves and i think that should occur with competition against Asia. I must admit that with the talent we have with players like Kewell and Viduka and the huge scalps we have had recently in friendlies against England, etc we are improving but make us part of Asia and abolish the Oceania region.

Anyway, so some of you guys are religious? I can tell you on paper I am Catholic. But I am agnostic-atheist.

How do I get this? Well, the proof of God is in his existence, the disproof of God is in his non-existence. The later is infact nothing, therefore cannot be proven. I don't believe if He did exist, His existence could be proven in any scientific way, hence not provable.

Though I don't think too much of the people who went to any war (though I care more for wars that are justified, like WWII - rid wolrd of Fascists), I can't think bad of someone who has died so recently.

Chris, it's funny you mention the swastika because the one I got does slightly resemble a swastika. It can be seen here (all black though):

http://www.onmarkproductions.com/assets/im...swat-maroon.gif (http://www.onmarkproductions.com/assets/images/swat-maroon.gif)

The swastika symbol itself actually comes from Hinduism. It was originally set square, but the Nazi's twisted it onto an angle. I can't remember what it means exactly, something like 'peace' or 'good luck' or something like that.

Well, we'll see what we can do about prices for the backpackers. But I'm bloody hopeless when it comes to remembering things that don't 99.9% have my own interests at heart. Bec will do it for you.

Here is the website for youth hostels in Melbourne;

http://www.hostelsweb.com/cities/melbourne.html

There is a hostel on Spencer street that costs $30 dollars a night (for two people). You will not find much cheaper then that.

The only problem is that you are about a half hour drive (or about one hour be train/bus) from where Linden and I live (I’m not sure where Chris and Ella live) but there is nothing closer probably because no one would want to go to Melbourne south-eastern suburbs for a holiday!!

I didn't know it was Hindu, I guess the Buddhists got it from then (just like virtually thier entire religion). I don't mean to sound rude, but the Nazi's got the swastika from a Christian symbol (which is supposedly the first, though I think pagans may have used it too). Hitler wanted an imposing symbol, and one of his advisors provided one similar to what was to become the swastika. This was a Christian symbol. I think this symbol can be found in Rome or something. I know the symbol means prosperity, peace and good fortune or something like that, and turned around it means the opposite (and to some, it automatically means 'anti-peace'). From this, some people (some dumbarses I know) actually thought the Nazi swastika was the opposite to the Buddhist one, but I told them differently (as they are infact the same way around). I've just read a book about symbol before. That reminds me, did anyone know that the Mitsubishi symbol symbolises divine power?

Um, sorry but I'm going to have to point out a few things from that post.

First, the swastika is one of the oldest known symbols, but was first associated with hinduism as I pointed. The word 'svastika' is a sanskrit word. For the life of me, I can't remember what it means. But the symbol was something like 'peace.' I'm not sure where you get christian from. Unless christians took it from India somehow. Unless you are thinking of the cross of Thor.

And as for the statement "I didn't know it was Hindu, I guess the Buddhists got it from then (just like virtually thier entire religion).

Sorry mate, but that is wrong. Fundamentally, hinduism is theistic. Buddhism is non-theistic. There are thousands of differences (not including the caste system.) What gave you the idea that they were quite similar.

Who's the bloke in your avatar?

--IHP
To 'point things out' is to IMPLY they are WRONG.

I guess who had the symbol first cannot be absolutely acsertained, as many religions had/have the symbol (or similar to it). The cross of Thor would make sense, as the Christians possibly got it from pagans.

Okay, now with Hinduism. When I said they were 'virtually' the same, I was being stupid and bagging them out. It was blunt statement (if not ignorant) and I apologise for that. To me, Buddhism is an improved version of Hinduism, hence similarities. It is like me saying that Judaism, Chrisitianity and Islam are similar. Yes they have many differences, but they have amny of the samme basic concepts. In Buddhism for example, many of the 'borrowed' Hindu concepts kept the same name.

I shouldn't have said it so ignorantly, but I must let you know I know my fucking stuff. I've done entire unit of work for both.

BTW, the avatar is Charles Firth (CNNNN, Firth Factor).

I love CNNNN, it's a classic. I couldn't tell who it was because my monitor is a wee bit small. I love it when they're interviewing someone and halfway through the first question, they cut them off and move to a different story. It's beutiful.

Sorry dude, I just got pissed off a little (though it was my fault initially).

So you are 'somewhat' a Buddhist? I'm not trying to bag you, I'm just interested to hear what beliefs of yours correspond with Buddhist beliefs? Personally, I think Buddhism is a good religion. That and Taoism are the best from my viewpoint. I could maybe call myself 'Buddhistic' as such. I believe in alot of aspects of the four noble truths, noble eightfold path. In particular, I believe suffering is caused by desire, and hence suffering can be stopped by abstaining from desire (or at least misplaced value). Of all the Buddhist concepts, I most strongly believe in is impermanence (as a result Buddhists don't believe in a 'soul'). I've got a bit of a mental block at the moment, and I can't remember what else I was gonna say. Actually, I remembered one thing, my belief in impermanence has alot to do with my belief in the existentialist concept of (absolute) subjectivity.

Anyway, eveyone has gotta love CNNNN! The site is pretty cool, you guys have to check out the polls (the answers are so... 'closed' as such)!

Well, it is school holidays now for me everyone, and I am away from my crappy town in the (conservative) north of Tasmania and I am staying in Hobart for a week and a half. For about 5 days I'm goin on Youth Parliament, with is self-explanatory. Since Ian is the only other person who might have holidays, have a good holidays Ian! Sucked in the uni people for not having holidays (no offence)!

No worries.

I say I am somewhat a buddhist because I have always been anti-religion. Always. Until recently I have read a number of books on Zen buddhism and absolutely fell in love with their interpretation of life. I like that they don't have 'rules' that must be followed or you'll burn in hell. They have guidelines etc. I think it's a beautiful discipline. Zen buddhism appeals to me more than other mahayana buddhist schools because they argue that buddha knew as much as we all do, he was simply more enlightened. Countless, countless more reasons exist which I can't be bothered going into now, but now I'd say that I am a zen buddhist. I think I have to take the step beyond the fringe of umming and ahhing.

You like Taoism? I always thought that Tao was a bit sexist, as in, the station of a woman is to be a child bearer (corresponding with the idea of jen) What's your thoughts?

Resistance are a bit weird, I'm not really associating with them much anymore, they just want me to sell their paper which isn't cool.

ISO and SAlt are very similar politically, although SAlt is a bit less realistic in their campaigning, SAlt are campaigning almost exclusively in a few campuses in Sydney and Melbourne, plus they are both anti-cuba (read my Rene quote in my signature for my revolutionary line ;)).

I think I'll steer clear of any group for awhile... keep reading up on shit too.

Bah, that doesn't make them fascists. My experience with some SA members have been different, however. A couple of their members approached me and Mindgame at a protest to ask whether they could get in touch with any syndicalist groups, which I thought nice (they were interested in syndicalism -- that's what they told me anyway).

I have a small amount of respect for them anyway, since they are non-parliamentary.

Yes, Resistance is your typical trotskyist organisation. Plus they are a lackey for the Socialist Alliance (DSP).

If you're ever going to get involved with any socialist and non-anarchist group, do something with the Socialit Alternative. At least they have a bit of go in them. They initiated a direct action on August 27th -- they tried to break into Melbourne University's Chancelor's house. It is true that they hardly do any campaigning, except for in universities.

I'm back Aussies comrades from two weeks holidays! I went to Youth Parliament in the first week, and bummed around Hobart (i was there for the two weeks) looking for Uni accomodation and what kind of new computer i should get for Uni.

IT WAS FUN!

I'm too tired to elaborate...

Anyway...

I'm a member of Reisistance and Socialist Alliance (a non-affiliated member). I must admit that they are Trotskyist, but I'm not exactly a 'Stalinist', so I don't really care. SAlt are FUCKING weird. They are the most radical leftist group, though I don't know much about the Spartakists... A person from one of those groups (or so I was told) tried to instigate a blockade of a military thingy in Tassie, but that isn't the style of the other leftists in Tassie. Socialist Alliance are more widespread, so they are cooler to me (otherwise I would have to join the Greens!).

So, Ian doesn't like Resitance anymore? I must admit, they do suck balls, but what else is there to work with? I find most (if not all) the Resistance/Socialist Alliance members as so dogmatic about everything. I agree with many of their views, but they do think about the other side often. Originally I didn't want to join any organisation, I just thought they couldn't accomodate my views, or I couldn't accomodate their's. But I thought fuck sectarianism, UNITE! Though I must agree with Ian that 'Green Left Weekly' is the paramount thing for Resistance, all else is secondary. I find the Gree Left as too dogmatic, but the message is there I suppose.

Someone said about the meeting. January is the plan, but no official confirmations have been made.

BTW, there are some new comrades talking here (new to me - RED CHARO, Comrade James, ???).

Could you introduce yourselves (A/S/L, etc) ?

Ian
24th September 2003, 09:12
I'm not a stalinist, I'm just not the sort that finds it necessary to debate the 'tough theoretical issues', which many members of the Deadly Serious Party and the SA think is the best pastime ever invented.

Don't dare talk about Cliff's version of 'State Capitalism' or you be looked at as if you had 2 heads, and once when I asked that perhaps international revolution in every single country (an orthodox Trotskyist principle) would be hampered by the fact that some countries aren't actually ready for socialism I was informed that I was being heretical by a more loose-lipped 'comrade', although not is as many words, apparentely I was using words similar to Stalin and his propagandists, but I was a bit of a newbie at that stage... oh well...

It's all well and good to be anti-sectarian, almost everyone is in word, but Res showed it's true colours in my opinion during the closed session for delegates only (of which I was one) during July when there was a lot of name calling and exclusions of people from roles due to their non-sectarian outlook. Classic quote from that session "Sure we are anti-sectarian, but, there are people we don't wanna be friendly with and they can fuck off".

They still fucking ring me wanting me to sell their paper, can't they take a fucking hint? I haven't gone to a meeting in months and when they email I don't reply, stupid dicks can't take a hint.
