I feel your pain, I live in a town of like 20,000 in Indiana. It is EXTREMELY conservative here, its not even laughable. I once had a parent come up to me in public and agressively confront me for being an atheist, indeed it was in the middle of a game in view of dozens of parents and my friends. To give you an insight into the mindset this guy was not only condoned but glorified for this type of behavior. The whole things a joke, we have two people on the street with flags right next to the stripes that say kill em' all let god sort em out. The biggest protest in the towns history, and it drew hundreds, was a rally to keep the large marble ten commandments out in front of the courthouse. A year and a half since then people still have plastic ten commandments in their yard in nearly every house. In the front lobby for our school we have a supersized american flag hanging from the ceiling going all the way to about three inches from the ground. When parents heard the whispers from the more whiney rightist tattle tale kids about my radical beleifs many of my friends were no longer allowed to hang out with me, preety remarkable considering im a straight a student, athlete, and am extremely anti-drug. At the same time kids are encouraged to hang out with known drug users and extreme chauvinists/sexual harassers. A vietnam infantry vet was harassed and vandalized when he flew the flag upside down. There is a large kkk presence in the county. In our school their are two large posters of hands in prayer with a flag blended into them. Our science teacher often has religious and biblical qoutes directly glorifying not morals from the bible but the existence of a supernatural being, when she doesnt have religious qoutes theyre from margaret thatcher or regan no shit. Are sex ed classes are the abstinence only program, i could go on and on but to sum it up this is right winger heaven.

RedComrade, yeah the fundies in our state went nuts when we atheists decided to use the separation of church and state to remove the 10 Commandments from government land in a small town. It was in a park, if I remember right.

I feel for you all. Jeez, I live in Massachusetts and find it conservative these days. If I lived in the Midwest, I think I'd off myself. The whole bible belt thing scares the shit out of me.
How do you guys live without the ocean? I'd go nuts.
