I don't like the 80s...
I like the 60s and a half or one-third of the 70s.

Apart from hip-hop and house (and some other music), it was a pretty shit decade.

The 80's sucked balls, it was the time when corporate capitalism and greed and neo-liberalism and ultra-individualism and consumerism finally won out and socialism went in decline. Conservative governments all across the first world tried to put to rest the rebellious legacy of the 60's well to rest, and corporations co-opted what remained as best as they could:

Last year we had an 80's theme in our christmas party at work, ending in a competition about who looked most 80's. It was awesome.
Two guys wore nothing but red swimming trunks -- they were the Baywatch guys.

Some friends of mine claim to like the 80s...and I'm like "wut, the 80s were shit; most of the music sucks, socially and politically everything went very bad in the 80s, the fads blow, etc."
White people told me this but I don't think this is that mutually exclusive to them...I think a few Puerto Ricans expressed a similar sentiment yet I guess it doesn't count because those Puerto Ricans that like the 80s are influenced too much by the U.S., etc.

hating on the 80s is so last decade
imho, the new romantics had an awesome look and awesome music
9nFXCwPlCg0
also The Pogues, Dinosaur Jr., Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club, Run DMC, Tom Waits, Sonic Youth, Dead Kennedys, Michael Jackson, Prince, Public Enemy, De La Soul, Elvis Costello, The Clash, The B-52s, The Police, Prefab Sprout, Stevie Wonder, Billy Bragg
I know a lot of people like hate on 80s Marvin Gaye and Lou Reed
I will gladly concede that both were past their prime, but they still made awesome music
yes, the 80s was the downfall of XX century socialism, but the other side of that coin is that it was also the downfall of cold war-era right-wing dictatorships

The 80s was probably ok in the beginning, but it seems to me that later on it was all about horrible decadent excess right in the face of the poor through-and-through, I think it was worse than the 90s even though I never actually lived through the 80s, but yeah the 90s was absolute shite as well so there you have it.

Besides the mass introduction of MDMA (which I think occurred in the 80s), if I'm correct the big drug of the 80s was cocaine...
not my type of drug.
At least in the 60s everyone was dropping some sunshine acid, now that I would like.

well the 80's was basically a giant club scene, so abuse of those particular drugs makes sense and is fully supportable.

If that isn't like saying that the Autobahn makes up for everything bad Hitler did, I don't know what is. Have you ever been to Newport?
The only good things about the 80s are me and http://www.amoeba.com/dynamic-images/blog/Brad/disintegration.jpg

That's what I was saying: The only good things to come out of the 80s are myself and Disintegration, both of which came in 89 - me 255 days before the end and Disintegration 244.
But were the 00s any better? Tomorrow begins a 2 week countdown.

The 00s kind of sucked/was a bit weak I guess (but better then the 80s) at a cultural level (but in terms of tech I'm impressed with the advances of telecommunication) and also in terms of activism it sucked probably more then the 90s (in the U.S. only perhaps); but it's just the beginning of the 21st century and things might gain more momentum...
I mean, does anyone know of anything good from the 1900s?
Angry Young Man
16th December 2009, 17:09
The 1900s (I'm assuming you mean 1900-10 rather than the whole century) showed incredibly optimistic signs for the workers. Yes, there was alot of brutal exploitation, but that generally pushed class consciousness up. An undeniable developmental period in working class history. What we really should learn from is other eras of quiet on the workers' movement. I think 1919-1926 was quite a quiet period, but then came the general strike. People have taken the recent calm as the death of the workers' movement

Maybe in appearance; I wouldn't know because in Florida the activism has sucked since time immemorial.
I'm referring to the seeming momentum that then build up to Seattle but after 9/11 it seemed that there was like a stall and also in the 00s we see the rise of teabaggers (right-wing activism) who relative to the left looks like they picked up steam/momentum much faster then the left.
Also, the anti-war movement seems to have just "died" since it appears to be dominated by liberals who thought that by voting a democrat (Obama) things will get better and when, after a democrat came to power, it didn't seem that way...well...where is the movement now?

Also, the anti-war movement seems to have just "died" since it appears to be dominated by liberals who thought that by voting a democrat (Obama) things will get better and when, after a democrat came to power, it didn't seem that way...well...where is the movement now?the anti-war movement was always a joke. i think its death gives us the ability to start focusing those resources on class issues.

Perhaps you are right and I'm just being pessimistic due to Florida is mostly an activism wasteland; the only good thing here is the Coalition of Immokalee Workers.
