When I download a font, how exactly do I use it in paint or openoffice?

When I download a font, how exactly do I use it in paint or openoffice?
In Windows: place your font file (opentype or truetype) into C:/Windows/Fonts

In OSX (mac): double click your font file and press "install font" in the opening dialogue

In Linux: depends on the distro, search "how it instal fonts in [insert distro here] linux" in google and follow the instructions given by experienced users in those distro's
