Good morning all!
I have an interesting question for you all which ties in with the idea of insomnia. I tried to get to sleep at 3am to get up early for Saturday, and failed miserably. One hour tossing and turning, tried to read to calm me down, and then another 45 minutes of hell have led me back onto the computer.
I'm back in front of said computer with documents out and Word in the attempt to do an essay. 3,000 words for Monday, incidentally the time of my first exam. Its on the quote that "no longer can communism be regarded as an intellectual problem, it is merely about the exercise of power" with regards to the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia. I will be arguing that it can only be seen as a exercise of power in the physical sense, as the reforms tried under Novotny and then Dubcec in 1960s Czechoslovakia was about their own entrenchments of power anyway.
I've done my into, might just put the kettle on. Question being: should I batter away now i'm about and pretty conscious, or try and get back to bed? Or maybe a couple of hours at about lunchtime and then back to it?
The floor, it is yours.

If you are tired go to sleep. Whole milk and a piece of bread, works every time.

Good idea, but I don't drink milk. Also concerned about fucking up my sleeping pattern for a 9am exam Monday.

Insomnia is the way to go; it's the only reason I'm ever able to do anything productive outside of work. Highly recommend it*
*ridiculous caffeine consumption should prevent falling asleep while driving.

I get this problem, I find it very hard to go to sleep when it's silent as well, so need something that's making noise in the room, even if that just means the sound of me other half breathing :tt2: Smoke weed, go sleep.
Also, why have you already got exams? I thought most places were starting after the holidays, at any rate, good luck with them.

To be fair in terms of rest the first few hours or so of sleeping when you're high is more akin to having passed out so you should probably factor in that you need to have a little more time to get into a proper sleeping clycle.

They sound a bit like hippy woo woo, that's a givenbut "ridiculous"? Not really. Weed, as a depressant and relaxant will have a similar effect to sleeping pills (although it will be far from as effecient) and meditation (the more woo sounding option) can have a positive effect apparently - I can't meditate worth shit however as I don't have the discipline so I can't really recommend it on first hand experience.
So yeah, not ridiculous at all.

^ Yeah, he could do that, universities in Britain do tend to provide free counselling, which includes counselling for sleeping problems as well methinks. Still though, I see no problem with smoking weed to get to sleep, except for the hole it puts in your pocket.
EDIT: Haha, passed out then :tt2:

IF Sam really wanted to go to sleep, the right amount of wine would do it. Just run down to the drug store first and buy a bottle of Feverfew and pop like 5 of those things, otherwise you'll have a ***** of a headache in the morning.

Drug store
 They sell feverfew at drug stores. It prevents migraine headaches, that's what I take it for. Also, if you take like 5 they are pretty good at negating the effects of a wine hangover.
Oh, if you're allergic to ragweed, then don't take feverfew.

Right now i'm taking a break froom booze and drugs, certainly until the exams and suchlike are over. I was feeling mega stressed out a few days ago so I went round to my mate's flat and stayed up all night taking mephedrone, fuck me that stuff messes up your pattern. Doubt i'll take it again.
Patchd: you're right its a bit weird that there are exams over Christmas, though TBH i'm quite pleased as it gets them out of the way and means I won't be doing eight or so in the summer. Its different for every Honours option i'm doing, and I need to take a lot of classes to make up the 120 Honours credits. Since Slavonics options ar all 15, it means 4 classes from that and two 30 credits for Central and East European Studies. Combine this with work and its pretty exhausting.
At least one of the exams is in Contemporary Czech Cinema, thats kinda my specialist subject.

This sounds like a really interesting class. I take it either European schools have quite a bit more interesting classes or you're much farther along in college than I am. Either way my classes are boring as fuck.

Not especially, I would say: there are many universities in America which also have Slavonic Studies/Soviet Studies sections. I believe my uni is one of only two in the UK to have one.
I'm roughly 3 1/2 years through a 4 year course, and hoping to do a postgraduate. Once you get into third year you definitely start specialising in your subjects: for example, i'm also taking a class on Mass Media in Central & Eastern Europe, History of the Czechs and Slovaks etc.

Weed helped me get to sleep for a good few months before I realized it was A) bad for my sleeping brain (makes you dumber in the morning, at least from my experience, since you get less REM sleep) and B) a waste of weed
Also with meditation, despite the mystical bullshit usually associated with it, it is an effective way to calm yourself down. I did it to deal with some anxiety issues I had (and it was recommended from a psychologist to boot). It's sort of like how shamans used psychoactives for centuries, all because the mystical beliefs were bullshit doesn't mean the drugs are placebos.
