I know it's kind of late, but I learned about this today. For whoever thinks negatively and pessimistically of today's youth, watch this video. If a 10-year-old is doing this, refusing to pledge allegiance to 'his' country, then a hell more people should be doing this. If we have subversion in elementary schools, why not after?

Lets just hope that the youth will tie our democratic values to the economy too.

Well, we can't just 'hope'. We must be out in the streets, showing them the truth. We must help out our fellow workers know their oppression.

Agitate, Educate, Organize! None for capitalism, all for socialism!

Maybe. Or maybe it's because the media will not acknowledge a lot of rebellious behavior that happens here. Nobody mentions the May Day rallies, for example. One of the worst arguments against socialism is that the socialist movement doesn't exist anymore, which is complete BS as we all here know.

My teacher in high school apparently missed out on that 1943 law

She also refused to teach evolution
and only taught abstinence only shit in sex-ed

Then she tried to get me in "trouble" with my parents... which was interesting

God I am glad I am out of school

It's not so much the lack of a socialist movement as the problem, it's what us socialists are doing with the movement.

My AP US History teacher was by best one

My American Government teacher was... on the other hand... a rat fucking bastard
He demanded that Obama was a socialist, which really got annoying, and taught about it. He later tried to get my ass suspended/kicked out
He also refused to teach about any parties other than the democrats (in his interesting twisted Glenn-Beckish way) and the republicans (in his interesting twisted Glenn-Beckish way) and only made a joke about the PSL and SWPhttp://www.revleft.com/vb/../revleft/smilies2/laugh.gif

The 1943 Supreme Court ruling was West Virginia versus Barnette. It overruled a school district that had expelled students who were Jehovah's Witnesses and who declined to say the pledge because taking oaths is against their religion. More recently some atheists have objected because the pledge contains a reference to God. But I'm disappointed that there has been no major resistance to the pledge based on how abusive it is to pressure people into taking a loyal to oath to the government, regardless of their views about religion.

Props to the kid for taking a stand for his beliefs, hopefully his political consciousness will continue to develop and he won't stop at the liberal fringe of leftism.

I haven't said the pledge in years, for reasons all leftists should be familiar with (imperialism, capitalism, pledging yourself to the state and a meaningless flag, etc).

Was there a big difference between the US and Europe?

Most of my teachers were "lefties" left over from the 1968 generation. If anything we had the opposite at school....

They still say the pledge in schools?
St. Mary's boys cling to their God
Through life's long day for Him they plod.
To God and country ever true,
In peace and war their valour show,
Where'er the cause of duty lies,
They prove themselves St. Mary's boys.

Yes, whereas in India we sing rough equivalents.

1) The media chooses to be selective. I'm sure they wouldn't like to report on a kid that refuses to pledge to his flag because he is a socialist. Their aim is to make people feel they are alone in their own radical behaviors.

2) Maybe the conditions which led to the televising of this were different?

I think this is overlooking it somewhat. The kid is ten for crying out loud. I'd love to meet a ten year old child who has enough of a full-bodied political opinion to refuse to take an oath because he is socialist, thus implying that he sees the hypocrisy between the pledge and the idea of state itself, but I doubt this will ever happen.

For such a state like Arkansas, this is pretty huge anyway, right?

When I was in school we were forced to say the pledge, or at least stand for it and salute it.

Good that people do refuse to stand for it and/or say it, but the problem is students are often coerced into doing so.

The law may say that students can refuse to , but in practice, students are often punished if they do not conform to patriotism.

As a Brit, I find it highly disturbing that such an act of patriotism is almost forced upon children from a very young age. The only thing I can equate it to is the Lords's prayer, which is usually recited in church schools; it's banned in other schools.

Yup. I've been in college four years and my professors have been at best only Democrats...where, oh, where are all the radical Marxist professors waiting to indoctrinate me?

Hell, I've got my Geography prof right now pegged as a Libertarian...and I know this because he "occasionally" (as in: every class) gets off track and lapses into praising capitalism.

Theres an economics(i presume) professor who is for sure a libertarian at my school. Ludwig v. Mises institute hat.

as for radical marxist professors. so far, i met a sociology professor who is active in the teachers union, a humanities teacher who is left leaning, and my english teacher who gave me Homage to Catalonia. nothing really radical though :(

TAUNTON, Mass. (AP) — An 8-year-old boy was sent home from school and ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation after he was asked to make a Christmas drawing and sketched what appeared to be a stick figure of Jesus on a cross, the child's father said Tuesday.

Chester Johnson said his son made the drawing on Dec. 2 after his second-grade teacher asked children to sketch something that reminded them of the holiday. The assignment came just days after the family had visited the holiday lights display at the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette in Attleboro, where Johnson said his son seemed taken with the religious statues he saw there.

"When he seen the crucifixion of Jesus on the cross, that's what he drew," Johnson said. "He liked that. That drew his eye."

Johnson, who works at the school as a janitor on a per diem basis, said administrators were concerned the boy drew Xs for Jesus' eyes, and particularly worried when his son said he'd drawn himself on the cross after officials pressed him about who he'd drawn.

Johnson said his son might have been worried about getting in trouble if he said he drew Jesus. "If he said it was him, it was more like a cartoon," Johnson said.

* * * * *

Now, why would the child believe that he would get in trouble if he said that he drew Christ? The answer is obvious. His father told him that the school bans Christ from Christmas, that the school is wrong, and that the child should draw Christ during art class as a corrective measure. The father planned it in advance. He even took his son to a religious spectacle to condition the boy's mind.

Returning to the subject of the thread, a prepubescent boy has no sexual desire and virtually no knowledge of politics. Why would a child make a big fuss about not saying the Pledge of Allegiance in order to create an opportunity to say that he was staging a gay rights protest?

Yeah, same reason.

In both instances, who arranged the press conferences?

Yeah, same father.

The problem is not that some comrades get tricked by the incessant media onslaught of contrived, hackneyed, false information. The problem is that none of you noticed the error and corrected it with criticism and self-criticism.

If this kid is ten, and already forming political opinions, just imagine where he will be in ten years. Has a bright future ahead of him. This video made my day.
