I give people rep for good posts from which I learn something OR for being very witty and humorous.

I should have made the poll multi-optioned so just pick your most frequent reason.

I give people positive rep when I laugh out loud or they have completely stamped on someone arguing a point I loathe.
I give people thanks when they are on my side and I think their post was quite good or their post raises a smirk.
I give people negative rep if I find the point they are making completely ignorant or I actually feel like punching someone after reading their post.

I also am more likely to give thanks to good posts made by new users, to encourage a feeling of self worth, inclusion and hopefully to keep on posting.

I give people rep because they are posting posts which are good for hegemony of my ideology.
I give people rep because they are funny, or because they "killed" someone with their post.

I gave negative rep only twice (I think) and those posts were really stupid, ignorant and reactionary.

I give people rep because...

They have pretty eyes and pouting lips. Especially after a six-pack of Heineken.

Wit, humor, people I admire, and when the post makes me nod my head in agreement. Stuff like that.

I like the rep system - I use "thanks" like a verbal "yes" at a meeting to show support for a point being made in either an intelligent or humorous way.

I haven't given a negative rep because I just found out how to do that last week.

^ that. Really good intelligent posts, an informative post (usually something I find interesting and hadn't know of or much about before), a hilarious post, or because.

I give neg rep because then I can go look at it in the whine thread in the "Marxist-Leninist" group.

I give rep to anyone taking a cheapshot at anti-Germans.

Also, good posts. Good posts are good.

I am only a newbie here but i have used the Vbulletin format before.

I tend to give out positive rep on merit only (for good political points & humour)and never give out negative rep. I would also use it as a form of encouragment to posters who may be a bit nervous of posting

Nothing is more satisfying than seeing a neg rep comment making it into that thread

Well, I still can't give rep outside of thanks so....

Basically the same reasons as Jazz for my thanks.

I give good rep if its something intelligent or if its something humorous.
I never give bad because I dont see the point, if you cant beat someone in a debate hold your hands up but dont be a whiney little blouse and leave neg rep.

It reminds me of lads who get their heads kicked in and as they are getting up they slap the other lad and run away.
Its just pathetic.

I don't give neg rep anymore because even if it is deserved the person doesn't take it that way and gives you neg rep back. If they have better rep than you their neg rep is worth a lot more than mine. But honestly some people deserve it.

I very rarely give neg rep and when I do I always make a reply to go with it. Generally, as with all my rep giving, I am giving the rep to the post rather than the user and find it odd for them to get all pissy about it. Generally I don't think the rep bar means anything unless people take away from it as well as add to it.

Il Medico

I don't really neg rep people. I was going to the other day because the person in question was beyond thick. They were complaining about X for X reason and I question if it was Y reason and he neg reped me say that it was Y reason and I should be mad at X for Y reason as well, grrr.
