I knew that Christmas was originally the pagan celebration known as Yule but nobody told me Santa Clause was. The original Santa was actually Saint Nicholas who was said to give presents to the poor children on Christmas eve (or something like that). The Santa that most people know today (i.e. the one in the red suit at David Jones) originated in a Coca Cola add. I kid you not. 'Santa' is purely the product of commercial advertising.

I have to agree with Scarlowy. Christmess was placed on a pagan celebration. Jul is the celebration of midwinter. It has little to do with religion.
Santa/Saint Nicholas however is a christian saint.
Coca Cola invented the Santa that we know today is news to me.

Not here, here we used to have "frostman" or something like that (damn language barrier). He's like santa, but thin and dresses in grey. He also looks old, instead of just being one. As a result, our family santa always came in with a cane and shaking hands.
Oh yes! And over here santa makes an actual visit to every home instead of cowardly leaving all the presents at various locations (though this method has increased it's popularity as well) One christmas I got to be an elf, although here they are too quite old and bearded. Sometimes even as small as mice. I'm rather short, so they dressed me up with a beard and goofy clothes, and I went for it.
